Nier Automata Retrospective - 6 Years Later, Still One of a Kind

After finished playing totk, replay nier again and i can say nier still the best game ever for me

This game will always be special to me. My girlfriend was a massive fan of the series and got me into it. We played it together and she watched in shock as i almost delete all her saves with ending E lol

I beat the game with every ending besides get every weapon and didn’t know leveling weapons got you more combos

Nier: Automata is the absolute pinnacle of 'video games as art' in our current generation. It didn't just tell an engaging and emotional story but it also directly turned to the players to make them consider their own views on humanism, nihilism, and personal sacrifice for the greater good. It even cheekily dropped in some things like sexy androids/machines, a nearly pointless fishing minigame, the ability to buy a 100% completion trophy, etc. which, given their considerations for every other design choice, really makes you think. I know Yoko Taro has said he includes sexy characters because he just likes them and every game needs a fishing minigame but I have a hard time believing he isn't just messing with us and we aren't supposed to think more about these decisions.

Still overpriced, 6 years later…not to knock it severely but it doesn’t offer anything Bladrunner didn’t which was 2hrs and maybe $10…

Automata is not a word that was invented by the game creators, and it's pronounced with emphasis on the o, it's not that hard to understand.

Oh, the fucking "I made a family" guy quest. That quest was a revelation for me. It made me realise true horror can break out in the matter of seconds. Coupled with that particular background music that played almost exclusively to that quest...

Oh and fun detail. The field deployed androids have blindfold visors because they cannot see the truth, and the operators have veils over their lower half of their faces because they can't speak the truth.

Yoko Taro should get to do FFXVII. Final Fantasy fans probably won't like it

Nier Automata spoiled every other game for me. I am forever chasing the "highs" of Nier Automata. Nothing come close including its prequel Nier Replicant. Every other game I would enjoy them, but everything is "dull" compared to Automata.

Fun fact: because 9s is a scanner type unit and not a battle type unit , if you were to self destruct in the bunker, nothing would happen unlike if you where to do it with 2b and get a joke ending

It's curious about the design of the androids, but seems realistic to me... YorHa is all about appearances - mechanical interiors and combat programming means having an aesthetically-focused shape can still be achieved without much compromise, and they are trying to emulate human recapture of the world - not just military, but also via some kind of culturally stereotypical ideal that may have been taken for granted over the years.

I give up.

I beat this game a week or so ago, and I'm sorry, but I can't get even close to what everyone else seems to get out of this game. After watching this, I have put in almost five hours of my time into watching videos lauding this game, and while my objective appreciation for this game is higher than it was, my subjective experience remains unchanged. The characters and story failed to make me feel almost anything, and the only thing I felt during the ending E credits was frustration.

This is not a bad game, I respect Yoko Taro for having his level of integrity, and I'm glad this game has seemingly affected people so much. If it was my job to review this game, I'd probably give it around a 7 or 8 out of 10, but it's not, and I really did not enjoy this beyond Platinum's usually great gameplay, and have settled on a 5 out of 10 for my personal experience with the game. I picked "No, nothing at all," and will probably never touch this game again.

I'm playing FF 16 rn and what is killing me is lack of attention and taste in world building via side quests and even main quests (some main quests feels like side quests). And what costs me the most is the potential the game has on its world instead. It could have been so much more (like the 7R too). I dunno if they're just incompetent or just lazy or greedy - more content as a filler as you said in the video. Makes me sad but the game still has some positive traits that make me keep on going.

Nier Automata was on another level. Got this on sale and without giving 2 fucks about it. It is one of my favorite games and it really made me introspect. What a game. I wish SE could move some devs to the ff studio lmao.

I think they could fix the difficulty by yeah, tweaking the numbers a bit on higher difficulties, but also kindof do like metal gear rising. Change the enemy amount and boss moves and patterns.

In Furi, higher difficulties make the enemies shoot more of the bullets that you can't shoot down. In metal gear rising, you meet later game enemies earlier in the game.

Making more complex characters ad adding them earlier in the game while tweaking the numbers a bit, also adding new boss moves and making the existing ones harder, could blance difficulty very well. Because you're not getting killed by one hit, you don't have to spam 30 minutes killing one enemy. It's harder because you have to learn the enemy patterns and crowd control due to the types of enemies around you.

Platnium Games, back when they were known as Clover Studios, also made a little hidden gem known as Okami. Very underrated.

I dislike the very beginning of the game. Maybe the first like hour or two. After that the game is so amazing. I love the combat and sound track. Plus the mod chips on your gear. One of my favorite combat systems

“Tales of” series is both action and has rankings. But it’s random battle or like FF13/ChronoTrigger in the later games. It might be too anime, but I’d be cool to see your take on that series.
