Spring Awakening Tony Performance

Always hated that the Tonys always censor shows that do performances at the ceremony, anyone watching the event is likely a theatre fan, and it's almost an insult to the creators to ask them to change their art because people might be "offended" by the language. America seriously needs to get a fucking grip, it's 2022 and they're still too scared to broadcast certain words past 9pm! That said though it seemed odd to me that Spring Awakening would include "Totally Fucked" in their slot, because they can't actually sing half of the words! 😂

This is the performance that led me to my Spring Awakening obsession...Years after its final performance on Broadway. Lauren Pritchard gives such a fierce performance. LOVE IT!!!!

Fabulous show, here and especially live on Broadway. Only problem with this video is several glitches where everything almost stops for a second.

Even with the censorship, this performance shows why the cast recording is so underwhelming. The cast recording doesn't have a hint of the edginess and angst you'd expect to find in this type of music. You can feel the difference in energy between this performance and the cast recording, which just feels mild and safe.

17 years ago!? Wow, it feels like just yesterday. Spring Awakening is one of those shows that leaves a lasting mark, just like Company, Les Miserables, and Rent did for me. It seems like the reverence for Spring Awakening has faded or been overshadowed by Hamilton, but it stands alongside the all-time greats and deserves that recognition.
