I can't really see why people were so vitriolic about Sophia Coppola. Personally I found Godfather 3 watchable and far less indulgent than the let's go back to the 1900's Ellis Island tedium of G2 that fanatics seem to love for some reason. Her performance is serviceable. If her name wasn't people would not have even mentioned her.

On a happier note, I now have a new found respect for Sophia Copolla. Not only did she bravely take on such a daunting task of playing a prominent role with little to no want of doing so, let alone with lack of acting experience. She took the backlash like a champ and persevered in her passions head-on. I don't blame anyone who would chose leaving the industry after that. She is absolutely inspiring

I think Nicky Cage was the only Coppola family member with real presence and acting chops.

I think she was perfect for the part. She looked Italian and portrayed that innocence that no other actress would have.

I'm a firm believer that looks are the least important thing about a person.
Having said that, I was thinking about how pretty Sofia looked, right before you read the critiques on her appearance.
I get that she may not be "Hollywood pretty", but wow, those standards are ruthless.

Nothing was going to save Godfather Part 3 from being trash. It was made several years too late. A gap of 16 years is much too long of a wait between films. Too much had changed from when we left the story in 1974 and suddenly found ourselves thrust back into it in 1990. Most notably being how old the key characters had become. Losing Winona Ryder was a huge blow. She would have been a bright spot that made this terrible excuse for a Godfather sequel a bit more digestible. Sofia Coppola was miscast. She had no significant acting credits prior to being given the role therefore she lacked the experience needed to carry a high-profile supporting actress part and it is painful obvious from the moment she appears on screen.

Godfather III is a terrible movie and I don't make any apologies for not enjoying it or her performance in it. In fact, I really wish that I could erase that movie from my mind but that's not the only Sofia Coppola movie I wish I could erase from my mind. Her films are disjointed, slow, and are somehow too vague in their female driven narratives yet not direct enough to get the exact point she's trying to make but I think her most egregious mistake in films were taking on true stories like Marie Antoinette & Priscilla.

Both movies are so wildly inaccurate that all she got right in both movies about each woman was three things: their gender, their names, and who they married. If you want to venture into making movies about the lives of real people and what they really did then you need to have some responsibility as a filmmaker to telling the truth. Sofia Coppola has made two such movies that are considered jokes amongst the people who know about the real life events whether is be French historians or people who knew Elvis, she's made two movies which she presented as true stories that had hardly any truth at all.

I feel bad that she was put in such an awkward situation. Having said that, she didn't have the talent or experience. While looks are certainly subjective, she doesn't come across as someone you're willing to anger a mob boss over. Ntm the incestual nature of her relationship with Vincent. They are first cousins.

I've always thought that part 3 was inferior to 1 and 2, but i don't believe that Sofia Coppola was solely responsible. The screenplay was mediocre, at best, so it simply became a half decent action film. There was not much depth in the development of the new characters. Andy Garcia for example, was at best, entertaining.

Unpopular opinion, I think by today’s standards, her look is very youthful and cute and innocent, and nowadays kids are stoic and monotone. she may have got better reception nowadays than than backthen.

I still can’t imagine one of those big Hollywood names in the role though that’s not fitting either. Marissa tomei would’ve been a good choice but I’m not sure if she would’ve been old enough.

I agree so many other things were wrong. How can you replace Robert Duvall? But yeah Sophia got the short on the stick. She is a Director though.

I love when these middle-aged male critics tell us audience members what makes an 18 year old women sexy, as if it's one of the most important aspects of filmmaking. Professionalism at it's peak, honestly 🙄👌

When I found out that Winona was supposed to be Mary it was crushing. She would have made it so much better. I actually liked Sophia on a personal level but couldn’t buy Vincent being so infatuated. Especially after how he treated Bridget Fonda.

When I saw the coming attractions of Godfather 3, I knew I was going to see in the theater.
If you view all three together as I have, and then watch the directors copy, and when they put all three together in order of events, it's wonderful. It is important to watch the evolution of Michael's character, and how he evolves as head of the family, and how that begins to move towards the end with his illness, and all the events that have led up to that point. Most of the people that don't like it, don't understand storytelling, and they want it to be their way. I felt very complete and resolved when I saw the third story. I saw everything and how it came about as a result of Michael and his attitude towards everything. Thank you, Frances Ford Coppola, and Sophia was a good choice. At this point I can't see Wynona in the role.

Trash movie...had little to do with her, the premise of the movie is trash. Anytime a mafia movie comes off as if everyone is so wealthy & refined it immediately loses its realism, ppl who didn't grow up in criminal/hood/mafia environment can't put a finger on it but just know that it lacks something. For whatever reason back in the 70s they showed mob life for what it was, gritty, brutal, a little bit of fun, thug life, etc. Once upon a time in America is real, Mean Streets is real, Godfather 1/2 are real, Goodfellas is actually a great movie but wasn't real. By the 90s seems like yt ppl started believing their own bullshit making the movies out to be a bunch of refined gentlemen that could get a bit rough from time to time. That's fake and this movie fell into that trap. Has nothing to do with this pretty girl

There's something so poetic about the stench of toxic masculinity that runs through hagiographic obsession with the Godfather movies, their content and, intimately, villification of Sophia's performance therein. Versus her quietly powerful anchoring of mainstream contemporary women's story telling and representation in more modern times. I couldn't be happier for her, more delighted by the work she produces, nor more relieved at having cinematic options other than big strong men doing big strong manly things ad tedious infinitum.

Great video BKR! As always. What a great channel ❤

Her dad tried to make her, and she couldn’t act. All that crap about not being able to find a actress at the last minute is just that…crap! Any decent actress could have filled in. Francis wanted his daughter to have that part because he was trying to make her a star. The studio didn’t want her, she didn’t want to be in it, so, why couldn’t a actual talented artist get it? Sofia was handed jobs. Her Comedy Central show was crap! She was once again handed that. Her film career…is BS! If she wasn’t Francis’ daughter, she would not be a director today…nepotism works!

I agree with Ebert and Kael. She's lushly sexy and brings an element of humanity to what is otherwise a cast full of broad emoters. Pacino by this point was only two years away from his dreadful ham take in "Scent Of A Woman", so I suppose we're lucky he toned it down as much as he did. Her character is meant to seem out of her element, and Sofia plays that very well.
