Asahi - Bringing Linux to Apple M1 Macs.

Although this is a year later, from my understanding the Mac’s boot loader isn’t locked down. It just that no other OS has been adapted to use arm instruction set yet. So they just don’t work.

Although now there are a few arm supported OS, it still seems limited with options. Especially compared to x86

By the way, nowadays the GPU acceleration on Asahi is comparable to Mac OS, in some cases even beating it, unlike Nouveau. But even back when you made the video, even without GPU acceleration, video playback was smooth, simply because the CPU is so powerful. Compilation tends to be even faster than Mac OS, because ext4 and other linux filesystems are just so much more optimized than APFS (or NTFS for that matter).

M1 is not a processor, is a system on a chip.

This is an apple’s fault, keep in mind this is a relatively new processor, so operating system manufacturers won’t be able to provide drivers for it

Not being able to install an OS isn't really apple's fault, windows for arm doesn't run because of some licensing deal microsoft has or something, and linux just didn't have the drivers to support this entirely different computer, I actually think apple is unusually chill in that regard

Well it can be installed yes. But I don´t think anyone will. If you have an expensive laptop. who will install a system without hardware acceleration.

Macs are made for macOS. i am a pro linux user and even system admin but on macs i wont install linux on it. macOS is fine and can do alot more crappy windows.

This would heavily improve mac gaming as well, you could dual boot with linux and actually better game compatibility with proton and directx 12 games, all we need is graphical drivers by asahi

After using Arch for years I bought an M1 Air like 8 months ago, it was my first mac and first time using macOS. I felt strangely at home, I know it is a meme but everything just works, not to mention the amazing performance and battery life. Even so, Asahi makes me so excited and I want to try it so bad. Who knows, I might end up coming back to Linux as a daily driver.
