I appreciate this build all the more because I know that Bad Fanfic Gandalf already exists in D&D and his name is Elminster. This build is a significant improvement.

I had him pinned as a dual wielding eldritch knight with a staff of power specifically tweaked for casting light, daylight, dawn, sunbeam, and sunburst. Since all things considered he doesn't use much battle magic.

We still need Boromir and Sam to complete the fellowship. Where are builds for them?

I think Light Cleric would be a perfect fit.
You're a serveant of Eru Iluvatar, god of light and everythig else.
You cast Greater Restoration.
You cast Fireball.
You cast Magic Weapon.
(all things that Gandalf did)

I'd say Artificer/Warlock(Patron Morgoth, obviously)/Eloquence Bard?

Perhaps Artificer/Conquest Paladin(says they often worship/serve gods of battle, again Morgoth)/ Eloquence Bard?

Thinking about it, Radagast actually has a fairly similar build path to Gandalf, though in his case you'd probably want the Oath of Ancients.

Gandalf ran out spell slots, so the DM has the Witch king leave so he doesn't wipe.

I actually really like Bard for Gandalf. The Valar and the Maiar (what Gandalf is) literally sing the universe into existence. They call is the Music of the Ainur.

Gandalf did not inspire D&D wizards, you need to read the Vance novels to find those wizards.

Just gonna say: Gandalf wields one of the three elven rings, Narya, in the books, and its' power is described in the Silmarillion as having the power to inspire others to resist tyranny, domination, and despair (in other words, evoking hope from others around the wielder). So yeah LITERALLY a bard

Ok so funny thing about Gandalf being a bard, is he is actually partially inspired, other than Merlin by a lesser known figure around the world but well known in Finland, Vainamoinen, who was known as basically one of the most powerful beings in his mythology as well as known for having a powerful singing voice

but also - aasamar bard is wholly correct and i am still mad that there's no divine bard class as they literally are the preacher i don't get it

You could argue that Gandolf’s vast knowledge would make him a wizard but he doesn’t really use it for magic and also wizards in LOTR are inherently magical

I was just saying how I thought Gandalf was a bard and I clicked here hoping that at least one level would go that way :)

I immediately saw paladin coming. But not bard. That was a surprise.
Also, Gandalf should have Thaumaturgy and Pyrotechnics, which this build lacks.

He should have been a Scourge Aasimar. Not only would it have been better for stats, but it matches Gandalf better
In that encounter with Theoden, he unleashes his divine form, and instead of wings, he glows. It also seems to affect Theoden in some way once he gets close enough, like the Scourge Aasimar form.
