Obviously the steel is always going to give a better pattern as the pellet count is over 25% higher ie 1-1/8 ounce of steel has roughly the same pellet count as 1-1/2 ounce of lead. To do a like for like comparison you would need to use 3/4 ounce steel and 1-1/8 ounce lead.

Doesn’t look like 55 yards, but I may be wrong.

How many foot/pounds of energy do you get with Steel compared to Lead?

Could you do a non toxic 70mm cartridge overview with the possibility of it being mandatory this season.

the problem isn't pattern, it's the steel literally bouncing off the birds

One with fibre, the other with plaswad, can't compare! After that I couldn't understand what the tester was saying!

Its not pattern that you need its penetration. Lead beats steel hand down. We need to work out a test for Steel v lead which anyone can do. I would put forward this plan. A pattern plate 6 foot square, a jig made up to hold shooting magazines, shooting times or the field or maybe sporting gun any magazine will do. It has to hold around ten with the spine outer most. All you have to do is count the number of mags the steel goes through. BASC have been testing steel shot for 20 years I have never sen any of the results.
All they tell us is that you only need to go up two shot sizes to get the same result. this I have found in misleading information in my tests and reports from the USA you need to go up four shot sizes. So if you use no. 6 lead we should use no 2 steel but you can not use no2 steel in standard proofed guns.

Remember that steel can damage your barrels.

The Quality of shot makes a big difference with lead. Really hard shot (5% antimony in game sizes and 6% in target sizes) holds up much better than softer shot. An effective plastic wad and slower burning powder to lower pressures also helps.

Shoot steel for all of my game shooting last bird I shot this year was a 65-70 yard goose, this bird was peppered and dead in the air. My choice of cartridge is the hull steel game extra 32g 3s an awesome cartridge to shoot. Will have no problem killing at range.

Another good review we will all have to get use to steel seeing the EU looking to ban lead soon

Johnny with all this talk of the death of plastic wads where do you think this will leave the duck men like my self who are forced to use steel/non toxic shot. I dont see any alternatives sprouting forth any time soon, the powers that been must be brain dead to think we can use fibre with steel, whats next titanium barrels

Probably worth pointing out that I believe Gamebore cartridges use continental shot sizes, so fewer continental size 4 shot than the equivalent UK shot. Interesting series of videos, but is there any way of using paper targets on which the shot holes are easier to see on a computer screen?
