I love the Blackwater Saga and just anything by Michael McDowell. The Elementals is VERY atmospheric and creepy. I think you'll like it!
ОтветитьPrince of Nothing is really something
ОтветитьAnother one of Mike's rankings. Always a treat to watch them. Thanks!
ОтветитьHard disagree. Blood Song is absolutely nothing like Name Of The Wind.
ОтветитьI agree with Mercy of the gods, i was very disappointed and then had to take a break from my read through of the expanse, will be continuing with the Expanse in the new year
ОтветитьSince you mentioned unreliable narrator, you should check out "Beyond Apollo" by Barry Malzberg. When done right the shifty narrator really adds mystery to the story.
ОтветитьCaptive's War came along at the end for me. I am looking forward to what happens next. I agree that the hype wasn't met.
ОтветитьBoy I thought for sure The Devils would be #1 if not Shogun😮
ОтветитьWell if I was going to start Terry Pratchett's Disc World series I think logically it would be with number 1?
I mean that's the beginning, right? Same with the Dresden Files, people said book 1 was not so good. But if you stop there you will miss so much goodness.
I will recommend a good series Stephen Kings Bill Hodges Trilogy which consists of Mr. Mercedes, Finders Keepers, End Of Watch and spin off is Holly. Highly underrated.
In my opinion, My most overated series has to be The Witcher series. I much prefer the games the very first book which is a collection of short stories is definitely the best by far whicg is just average.
Read a lot of book 1’s that I plan to continue with. They include:
Shogun (don’t know how interested I am in others)
Priest of Bones
Ender’s Game
I’m on book 2 of Dandelion Dynasty now and loving it.
I read the whole Pines trilogy and thought it was great. Continue to be impressed by Blake Crouch
I keep seeing the wool books at my bookstore but i never looked at them and have no idea what its even about for the longest time i didnt even know it was sci-fi
ОтветитьI hated discworld. I read like 5 books and i just dont get the hype whatsoever
ОтветитьTop 3 new series: 3. Stormweaver by Bryce Courtney (only because I read Iron Prince and that was it) 2. Dungeon Crawler Carl 1. Age of Madness Trilogy
ОтветитьLoved Wool, Shift and Dust. It hit me at the right time
ОтветитьDoes anyone else see the orbs in sky?? If you have a good camera phone zoom up on it. Its so weird.
ОтветитьI read Blackwater this year too. I loved it so much. I really miss those characters.
ОтветитьGreat video and rankings, Mike! Im so jealous, this list is basically my top list of things I want to read😂 You rocked it, brother, enjoyed the heck out of hearing you talk books as always!
ОтветитьI started Mistborn, The First Law, and The Sun Eater this year which has made for interesting reads
ОтветитьGreat video Mike !! So glad to finally see you being more critical! I appreciate because I usually align with your tastes so it’s awesome when all the booktubers don’t act like Chris Stuckman who gives zero criticism ever…
ОтветитьI wish you had put the book covers up between the ranking headers.
ОтветитьMore than anything so far in this video, I have learned about the thin line of humor in horror. What about in genre blenders? Anyhow, if there's anything that BookTube has taught me this year, is that I need to be reading more. Especially with POV stuff, the last video made me realize I don't really know how to do that stuff yet. Heck, I have a hard time with spelling and using a semi-colon!
Satire!
I'm absolutely loving the silo series, I'm almost done with book 2. In just 2 weeks 😂 it's a page turner for me.
ОтветитьAnother fantastic video! Thank you Mike!
ОтветитьAs a big fan of the solo books the show is done really well. The books are short so they had to add more content and characters and even tho they seem to be twisting things it’s done very well.
ОтветитьFavorite series I started this year: Live ship count? ..Shadowdance, Ripple System. It seems most of my year has been continuing series or stand alones. Started getting into the warhammer universe.
ОтветитьIt's almost Christmas time, if you want to check out a fun Discworld book, read The Hogfather. It was the first discworld book I experienced, now I reread it every year on Christmas eve (14 years now)
ОтветитьMike, the more I hear you talk about books you like, the more I think you would love East of Eden by Steinbeck. Have you read it already? If not you should take a look at it.
ОтветитьI think the Asian Saga has a shot at being on the top three on this list in the future. For a character driven reader, Clavell takes some beating.
ОтветитьI started the John Dies at the end series and got upto book 4. Haven't finished that yet due to distraction. The first three are alot of fun. I like how these characters are plonked into different situations and the unpredictable nature of the drug. I've bought the rest of the author's work and I'll read more in the next year.
ОтветитьYessss we love to see the rankings. Saga of forgotten warrior and Second Apocalypse have to be high on my 2025 list
ОтветитьGreat video!
ОтветитьI was blown away by Good Omens, so I then picked up The Colour of Magic. It took ten years before a friend finally convinced my to read another Pratchett novel. DiscWorld has since become one of my favorite series. Pratchett's ability to explore important philosophical ideas and write humorous satire is incredible. I suspect he will eventually be taught in literature classes next to other greats like Jonathan Swift.
ОтветитьEagerly waiting the day you read Legend of the Galactic Heroes.
Ответить"who does 2/3 of a trilogy and does not finish it"
Some authors come to mind
I managed to start and finish the first trilogy in The First Law, and really enjoyed it! I plan to keep going next year!
Also, Blackwater is definitely on my radar... but maybe after Stormlight 😂
Shogun is a huge book which I could have continued for hundreds more pages.
Such a great world to spend time in.
I’m sorry to see Will of the Many fall off our radar - it was one of my favorite reads last year.
Great video as always! thanks Mike
RE: Terry Pratchett: I couldn't get into any Discworld books except the ones about the witches. I started with the book about the orangutan in the library and I was totally LOST.
ОтветитьLies of Locke Lamora is the only series that matters ❤
ОтветитьBlackwater rules the roost. Yes!
ОтветитьI started discworld last holiday season with Hogfather, and did not enjoy that read. I haven’t had the motivation to read the other books ever since.
ОтветитьIf you haven't read, try The Pariah by Anthony Ryan
ОтветитьI think book2 of John Dies at the End is my favorite. But I agree. Book 1 was fun to read. nothing mindblowing
ОтветитьGood video, with cogent observations (even where I had a different experience.)
I tried to read The Colour of Magic first as well, and for the same reasons. Predictably enough, I DNFed it. I don't generally pick up a lot of books because of others' recommendations, but everyone I know was raving about the series, so I asked for advice. I read Guards! Guards! (because that was the recommended starting point from the people I talked to) and Going Postal (because I picked it up kind of randomly).
Nope.
It's statistically very likely that if you read further in the series you will like it much more than I did. (Everybody!)
But I have determined that Pratchett is just not a writer for me. Three bites at the apple and it's all worms and bruises.
Oh well. It's not as though I'm running out of things to read.
Thanks for the video. I would honestly say - given your preferences - i think you will love 'Snakewood' by Adrian Selby and 'The Black Tongue Thief' by Christopher Buehlman. Both are such underrated grounded dark fantasy novels with incredible characters and prose. Selby has a three book series int he same world, and Buehlman actually writes all sorts of stuff like fantasy, weird alternate history and horror. Defo check them out.
ОтветитьI hope after the show you pick up Silo again. Don't get me wrong, I think the show is doing great, but I think it's taking the core of the series and it's doing something slightly different, kinda like beacon 23 did. I love the Silo series and the show still has me guessing what it's doing
ОтветитьMighty Mike! I cant watch your ytubes anymore. It just adds more to my already out of control TBR.
ОтветитьMike, if you like viking stuff you should check out the show “Vinland Saga”
ОтветитьOh yeah, so glad Blackwater made #1. It is one of my faves as well.
Ответить
