When they were doing the whole method thing with Karl talking, I feel like the people at like the house or Matilda was trying to calm down this unknown spirit or Toby from the other place they were at.
Toby telling them or her to: Shut up, stop talking
And them or Matilda saying: Be nice, please
Toby have been upset with them at the other house or specifically someone in the group for Tony to finally say “sacrifice” for some kind of revenge for what they or one of them did.

Another thing to follow up this
At the beginning no one was really doing anything. None of the spirits seemed upset or mad and for hostile around them, but not timid to make it know that they were there.
They even tried to make the group apart of it by making some signs.
But Toby.
Toby is the trickster, right?
My theory is that when they were asking, this was Toby.
Im not sure if he was doing this all at once?
But maybe when he was causing it, the music box went off as well to show who the real ghosts who should be there were.
Maybe they were fighting in some way?
All I know is, Toby HAD to be part of this.
If that’s not true, I don’t know what to say.
