Thank you for these tips. I remember someone saying you shouldn't put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear.

Hiya, Doctor, I hope you see this comment. I looked up the topic about proper and healthy ear-cleaning because not only have I experienced occlusion by ear wax several times through my life, but I have a tangential concern:

I have recently started riding a motorcycle. The general advice for saving one's hearing from the wind noise inside the helmet is to use hearing protection, ear plugs being the leading advice. So, since I'll be using earplugs on a regular basis (I'm using disposable foam ones now, and I will start experimenting with various reusable ones -- yes, I'll make sure I clean them between use), I am thinking two things:

1: Plugging the ears for prolonged periods of time also requires letting them air out for long enough to dry the excess moisture, as it can foster bacterial growth, as well as not allowing stuff like wax to properly dry as it normally might during that time (something I read in an article about prolonged, if not constant, use of ear buds in the mid-2000s or so, which means of course I'd have no way to recall the exact source where it was posted). At least this is easy to mitigate, by taking breaks and removing the ear plugs for a while to let my ears dry out.

2: I am worried about ear plugs potentially shoving wax into my ear canal, whether or not it contributes to occlusion. So, any advice on safe use around such things with earplugs would be helpful.

What about removing the cortisporin ear drops white residue stuck to the eardrum? It is highly irritating and burns the ear. How does one soften that and remove it?

I came to this video because almost every time I go swimming the water washes it directly on to the drum leaving it stuck there and leaving me sounding to myself like I am still under water. It is also ringing now. What can I do to get it off the drum and keep it off

To note, if you are one of those people who suffers from earwax compaction (earwax builds up to such a degree that you lose hearing) then, yes, you are ok to and should clean out those ears. But only if you feel that compaction happening.

I wear hearing protection all the time. My job is a high volume job and hobbies are high volume as well. I spend hours with earplugs in, always in and out. I am always packing earwax in to the point of needing to get them cleaned. Is there anything I can do to help prevent this?

I get the argument that you shouldn't need to clean your ears, but sadly in my case that simply isn't true. I have lost count of how many times I have had to go to a clinic to have hardened or sticky earwax removed from my ears because it's causing a blockage, resulting in my hearing being muffled.

After having this happen a few times, I finally saw an ENT, and as it turns out my ear produces more earwax than it actually needs for whatever reason, making me more susceptible to blockages. He told me I should use a syringe every week or so with warm water to wash out wax buildup. He also recommended the shower water method too, but said using a syringe might be better.

I've been using a syringe for months and have had no blockages, but it wore out and need to buy a new one. I've also heard that a syringe could cause ear infection too, so now I'm trying the shower water method to see if that's enough, so I don't need to worry about infection or keep buying a new syringe when one wears out. Hopefully that'll be enough. If not, I'll probably pay another visit to the clinic and go back to using a syringe.

Funnily enough, my girlfriend has the opposite problem. Her ears don't produce enough earwax, and she commonly gets dry ear because of it.

A lot of shower heads have black mold. Wipe it with a paper towel when it’s wet and you will see it on the white paper towel.

The only two things were getting an ear wash and having a doctor actually pluck it out. Just see a doctor every year to clean your ears and don't wear earbuds all day. I wear over the ear headphones consistently now that I've realized earbuds keep shoving wax back in.

I tried my absolute best trying to keep this "dont clean your ears" rule for about two or three months. After weeks of itching and discomfort I realized that this rule was stupid and finally got rid of the l piles of yellow lint that accumulated in my ears. What a relief.
So, my friend, you can be the greatest ear theorist on the planet but your theory doesn't work in practice. At least not with my ears.

My ENT once had such a hard time trying to remove my ear wax that he sent me away, told me to use mineral oil every day for a week to soften the wax, then come back. What an ordeal. Then once, my blocked ear wax broke loose on its own in my sleep and I awoke with loads of warm wax just gushing down the side of my face. It was AWESOME!!!!
