Oh shit so DLSS doesn't make EVERYTHING look better. Good to know. But personally, if textures are what it makes look worse, I'm okay with it tbh. I didn't know about the distant thin objects but tbh I didn't expect even performance DLSS to do better than native. That's surprising but good for us.

DLSS and Nvidia Reflex boost are the best things about PC gaming. They both make a huge difference IMO

I like the raytracing in the game, though it makes everything darker so some scenes were partially just black screen

This video explains why they went with the saturated colors. it's all about the RT. Unfortunately it was still released on consoles and had to target a bunch of different set ups, so not everyone will use it to target the 60 fps

Big thing you mentioned with the flashlight is lack of shadows, and that brings up the fact that many many games turn off shadows for lights completely. Any light that isn't the sun or moon often cast no shadow in the vast majority of games, even brand new ones. When you see a game that has them turned on, it's crazy how much better it looks, and how it enhances the scene. Another thing with flashlights is that games always use these really hard set textures for the light. As if it's coming out of an old cheap bulky flashlight, and I think it always degrades the quality greatly. One of the only games I've seen with a proper flashlight is ready or not.

Been playing this at 4K DLSS perfomance maxed out and all I can say is that this and Exodus are the best examples of ray tracing to date. Developers need to stop just focusing on reflections and puddles. RTGI combined with RTAO is pure heaven and makes me look critical at any lighting now that is not Exodus or DL2 lol. Games just look so bland with rasterised lighting...
It's like high refresh rate gaming. If you never try past 60Hz, you will game just fine. But when you get a 144+Hz screen, game on it for a month and go back to 60Hz...boy oh boy, it feels so wrong.
Same thing with RTGI and RTAO.

My problem is that developers prefer not using more than 1 bounce, making scenes to dark when they really shouldn't be. Metro Exodus EE was great with their unlimited(?) bounces

I think many of the "problems" that we're facing with commom rasterization techniques isn't necessarily an issue of the tech itself, but on how it is used and implemented. I'm not saying that they don't have shortcomings, because they do, but there's often ways they could have been inplemented better. Ambient occlusion for example. It's fair to point out that in this games implementstiom has a too steep fall off, and that the edge bias is probably too small, leading to some fairly unnatural looking indirect shadows around objects and walls. But that is really just a wrong artistic decision by the developers. There is nothing stopping them from adjusting the settings to more accurately reflect the scenery. Or if there's no optimal way to do it with one implementstion, there's nothing preventing them from running two passes (or more) of AO ontop of each other. One would be addings stronger shadows around small corners and edges to enhance surfacelevel detail, and a second one with a less agressive bias and a much bigger radius with a more suttle fall off, to create bigger, area covering shadows.

I made a graphics mod (reshade preset) for portal 2 a while back, trying to achieve what i thought, is the best that portal 2 can look like with modern post processing effects like bloom, ambient occlusion and screenspace reflections. It would be interesting to see if you like my implementations and maybe you could try to see if you can beat the mods visuals with RTGI shader, and see if raytracing really is the be all solution for realtime rendering.

I play on a 2070S super-whiz-bang-EVGA Edition at '1200p' - and there were performance issues even WITH DLSS - even with DF recommended settings.

I turned off RT and maxed everything, and it was smooth as a baby bum. I kept RT off and never looked back. The RT in this game is FAR too heavy for what it is doing.

For ray-tracing to truly shine it needs to be the only option. That way there's no interference, and we've already seen this with certain very destructible environments.

Raytracing does still take way too much performance in DL2, without it I can play it in 4K without issues, but turned on I have problems running it at 1440p and I definitely didn't built a new pc to play at 1080p.

i hope ray tracing is the norm soon, there are so many interesting things that could be done with global illumination and real time reflections if every somewhat modern system could use them.

Ответить
@simpson6700
@simpson6700 - 25.04.2022 18:00

flashlights usually don't emit any shadows in games, because the light is casted directly from the center of your screen and all shadows it casts would be obstructed anyway and so they save performance by just not doing it.

RT really is impressive in games with terrible (or subpar)raster lighting, like Dying Light 2.
I think showcase the point of it better than some of the more "impressive" RT showcase games, it reveals the true advantage of the tech: It can't really be bad implemented as easily as raster lighting can.
what do I mean by that? well, instead of having to master every trick in the lighting book it does things like GI and reflections, things which with rasterization are done with a combination of 3 or more different techniques("tricks") each, all of which have possible artifacts and can go wrong in so many ways, it does it in one pass by simply simulating more closely what light does irl(but not perfectly, it's still a trick in many ways). You can do breathtaking and often almost indiscernable from RT raster lighting(and sometimes even more asthetically pleasing! I still prefer top notch raster than RT in many cases, for performance reasons and appreciation for the tricks and how well they can do the job) but it takes good developers and tech people who are good at doing it, while RT only takes getting it working and it "does the rest" so to speak.
While during exclusively rasterization age (where we were not long ago and still are in a lot of ways) lighting quality varied wildly between games and while some looked (and still look) stunning, some had really annoying lighting glitches and jank or looked flat, in a hypothetical future where every (or most) games are RT'd all games willl look more uniformely well/realistically lit, with none of the (raster) jank (but maybe some RT jank like noise and increasing ray count effect).

I love ray traced shadows, they replace the ugly quality stepped shadows I hated my entire life, I spend hours to get the shadows to look less aliased/flickery in some games. Together with RTGI and RTGO, RT shadows work wonders on games. Reflections are often not worth it yet as they have less view time, unless you're Cyberpunk and just fill the game with them, which tanks performance hard on even the best graphics card. I consider those more of a next generation things to fully utilize their potential. I just hope the hardware gets affordable at this point, as I can see devs abandoning rasterized effects in the future completely.
