I stepped into the cinema room with absolutely zero knowledge of the existence of the lord of the rings stories. Tickets were bought by some friends, therefore i was truly walking into watching a movie that I have seen no trailer and had zero awareness of its content. I fell in love with it right there, from the start of the prologue! And keep returning back to them until now. I made the same gift to my son :)

When they took it to New Line the company insisted they do 3 films instead to line up with the books
Which is why it had to be rewritten as 3 films and also why the Fellowship was rewritten so much that sometimes the day before shooting a scene it was rewritten

Why are people upset about Christopher Tolkien not liking the trilogy, you for sure don't like many movies, besides I can understand his point, I used to read the books once a year until the movies came out, even tho I love them, now I can't even remember how I imagined the characters and the environments, now after some years I've picked up the books again and even listened to Andy Serkis narrations and I just imagine the characters as the movies depicted them.
Besides Peter Jackson took a lot of liberties and omitted a lot of things and added tings, I get it is an adaptation but I could be a notch more closer to the books.
For one thing I missed Glorfindel...and if you don't know who this is, go read a book or three.

The reason Tolkien jr didn’t like the movie was cause he always was trying to sabotage his father’s work. Tolkien notes numerous occasion where his son would try to steal his pages he was working on and out them into the fire to prevent the tale from being told. He believed his father was culminating evil thru the books he was writing. Very interesting stuffo
