Not sure if your still putting out help content but I have a problem I'm trying to solve and perhaps your subscribers could benefit from.
I Have a sharepoint site where me and 3 other supervisors have full control access of. We have a very large, and heavily formulated Excel scheduling document that is password protected and must be maintained on the fly by us. We must also share this excel file with 28 other office personnel who only need to view it for scheduling update purposes. That said because the file is password protected it cannot be viewed via the web browser so Sharepoint opens it in the native app.. namely EXCEL. This poses a few issues that I cant resolve.
1. On SOME users computers the file will automatically download in edit mode causing lockout even though they didn't hit one of the two yellow edit buttons just below the ribbon for editing. I need to remove open in edit mode feature on these users permissions.
2. If a user happens to hit one of these two buttons for editing once the excel file opens this locks out the file for us to edit until the application (Excel) is closed..ie checked back in. Now mind you, they have no intention of editing because they don't have the password but nonetheless they will still hit them just to get that yellow bar and buttons off there screen. SOOO ...If they forget to close the excel application and go on leave then were locked out until they return and close the app. And before you suggest it..undocking the computer from the network does not check the file in... the file must be closed for sharepoint to consider it check in. (no we don't have a check in and out feature set).
Is there a way to remove these editing buttons and have this file only viewable to the 28 employees but still have editing options for the 4 of us???
How I would like it to work:
I need this one excel document isolated (its own library??)
The excel file (not the folder it sits in on the sharepoint) needs to be locked from editing at all times (password protected)
4 Supervisors need full control (for editing purposes)
I would like to share it with others (viewing privileges only)
Remove the editing features on the excel document once it is open for normal reader viewing..
You think you can solve this?
