How will you shower during winter? Or even just use the toilet in the night?

I think I can remember bits of this and I think that I thought that a wooden house/workshop was a good idea for the entire circle. Interesting in the fact that you thought that you would be in it for 24 months. I think that time is a piece of elastic, it stretches as time goes on. Thanks for posting

It's so satisfying to see how far you've come in achieving your plans. That 'eira' was a natural place in which to place your tent and your other necessary living extensions. Well done you two!

I didn’t remember this stage anymore. Good update for me! BTW, I follow a Channel called Finca Life where they just upgraded their solar system for cloudy winter months. It was interesting. They might not use as much power in their daily life but have to power a whole water filtration system.

Really liked this. I’ve watched the amount of digging you’ve done, have you ever used or seen a maddock, for breaking up soil, digging trenches, holes etc. I’m sure Kylie would have grown up with them in Australia. They are like a pick, but with flat blades, and can be filed or ground to fix the edges if damaged on stones etc.

This was really interesting to go back and see your plans from the beginning. It was extremely useful. Lesson for me, as hard as you both work on your property, when Guy was saying the tent was to be your home for 6-24 months I realize that things can take quite a lot longer than planned. Your off grid home is comfortable and functional. Your planning was on point. Cheers.

Your 'temporary accommodation' solution, or something similar, would suit so many people restoring an older property. Combining outdoor living with solar power, a temporary water supply and a temporary septic tank/camping toilet and you are all set to live on site and begin work.

One very important question, what are the legal restrictions? I know that will vary from country to country, but thinking only about Portugal for now, did you need local permission or does the temporary nature of your construction mean that you could just get on and do it?

to this Californian, the threshing circle looks like our typical kiddie wading pool, so I'm curious about it collecting water in the rain--does it drain off quickly so you aren't living over a pond? I'm guessing it must, since the wood deck supports need to be dry so they won't rot.

The circle thresher is a throw back to Portugal's original Celtic heritage. Even though runover by the Romans, our Celtic ethos is still honored and remembered in many ways, including this one. We still have quite a number of Celtic sites and hamlets where everything built was circular including huts and agricultural areas so important for survival. The circle in Celtic mythology infers protection, and so it makes sense that where cereals were taken to & prepared, be within a circle of protection.
