What is a Long Block? What is a Short Block? What is an In Frame? What is a Platinum Kit?

I have a 2013 grand caravan 3.6 short block that needs a ton of work. I found a low km 3.6 long block from a 2019 caravan. Do you know if I can swap the short block for the long block? Not sure why it wouldn’t work but I’m not sure?

A long block is one that is longer than standard. A short block is one that is cut down to size to make it shorter overall. That's what I know to be true from being a certified cat mechanic.

Hey Josh, is it true that Cummins ISX15 and X15 series engines use the same bottom end as the C15?

Long = head, piston and everything inside an engine
Short= no head everything else, piston cams rods etc.

Crank shaft just went out on my lmm I’m no mechanic, if you can give me any suggestions on what to buy I would greatly appreciate it should I go with a long block or short block and from what website or should I just pay for a rebuild ? I don’t want nothing to pricey Nothing to pricey as for I wasn’t expecting my crank shaft to brake especially around the holidays but I also want quality :/ thanks brother

In all my years of a engine building I always thought that a long block meant that it had forged internals in it from factory. Oh well I learned something new today thanks for the video Adept Ape.

I wonder if you can make a long block/short block into a bare block. As in weight reduction. Idk if thats even possible. As like taking things off you dont really need such as PS/AC/EGR delete. Ect.

I still can't wrap my head around it. So, work at an auto parts store. When consumers walk in and talk about their projects or what they're actually driving. They say oh it's a blah blah blah sorry block or vice versa... why. If from what I got from what you said, sort block is basically an incomplete engine, yet that's what they're driving. How can it be a short block.

i had my #6 cylinder seize in my 5.9 cummins when it ran out of oil last year, i ordered a rebuild kit from PAI industries. total cost between machine shop and parts was about 1800.00 for the rebuild.

Thank you for the explanation. This subject is really made more complicated than it needs to be. I believe most people, like myself, thought there is a physical difference between a short and long block with no crank, rods or pistons. Basically like a big block vs a small block.
