Every house has spruce on it. Spruce woods, logs, trapdoors, or even just a barrel. so this basically means spruce is the best wood in minecraft

Instructions unclear, I am the outside world

I always like building little castles as outposts for exploration - a few central places where you can store all the items you find while venturing out into the world. You can always make a few roundtrips to get them all to your main base and you don't have to throw away as much!

Another idea is building your house next to an abandoned nether portal with a mix of crimson and oak or spruce wood and grass as netherack
