Bastion's father wasn't bullying or berating Bastion. All he wanted was for his son to do good in school. He was told by Bastion's teacher that all Bastion was doing was drawing unicorns in his book and neglecting his studies. What's so wrong about wanting your son to succeed? If Bastion was doing well in school I'm sure his father wouldn't give a shit what he did in his spare time so long as it wasn't hazardous to his health.

Atreyu’s horse getting swallowed in a quicksand is the most heartbreaking movie scene I’ve ever seen as a child, and still one of the most heartbreaking until now.

In essence, the movie is about not losing your imagination, not losing your child fantasies to growing up. They can co-exist, and the product is as far as your imagination will take you! Dream now!

I always saw Bastians dad as trying but being lost and out of his element. In the 80s dads didn't really do emotional and were not very good at dealing with a child that not only just lost his mom but seems to have been a sensitive heart already. I see his dad aa trying and not knowing how to be there for his son but also dealing and coping not very well himself with the loss of his wife.

I'll come back when I watch the movie once again :)

Basically, the movie is an allegory for Nietzsche's philosophy of Eternal Return; Eternal Recurrence, hence The Never Ending Story.

Interesting take on it but honestly I think you dug too deep and added a lot of projection. Thinking about the year / time this movie came out I've always focused on the movie being about kids not getting wrapped up with new technologies. For kids to never stop daydreaming / creating / reading books etc. how to create your own life as opposed to all of those "beep beep beeps" that tell you what to do and kill your creativity.

The narraroter references colonization 😂. I would contest the book/movie is more aligned with the pressing times of the rise of the soviet Union vs United States. Atreyu(USA) vs Gmork(USSR)
