$999 Full-frame Mirrorless Cameras: Canon RP vs Nikon Z5!

UPDATE: The Canon RP does have 4k but only up to 25 FPS, without Dual-Pixel autofocus and with a huge 1.76X crop. Sorry for the mistake! It doesn't change any of our conclusions.

Two years on: Longtime (since 1965) Nikon user. The Z5 is a better body but Canon's lens blows away Nikon's offering. C'mon, Nikon!

What zoom lens would you suggest for the Nikon to get sharper photos for a long time non-professional? Mainly for travel and not sports.

As a Nikon guy, I'm surprised that the canon was so much sharper, despite not having IBIS. It seems like both the low light tests and sign tests had much better clarity on Canon, probably due to the lens stabilization. Kind of crazy how much of a difference there was there.

4K is over rated. I have used a Nikon Z5 on my vacation in Arizona. The camera overheated and shut down in 4K Video in the hot sun (90F=32C) after 1 minute of recording. 1080p60 did not overheat and it was fine. I wish 2.7K was available, like in GoPro.

Sony was eating everyone's lunch with bang for buck that blew away Canon and Nikon. Now Canon is leading bang for buck. That Nikon is getting serious about pricing should wake Sony the hell up. Sony was winning and now they are utterly flailing and losing ground.

The Canon has a tilty flippy screen and the Nikon doesn't. End of story! I got a refurbished RP direct from Canon for just $600 about a month ago and I've been blown away by what it can do.

As for nikon batteries I was shooting a lot of fashion events and let me say that only once I had to change the battery, and it was the one lasted for 10 hours. On a regular 3-5 hours photoshoot with around 500-1000 pictures taken the battery still has half of juice.

I have a Nikon D610 along with a 50mm 1.8G and a 85mm 1.8G. would it be worth it to upgrade to a Z5 and use a FTZ adapter?

Seems the images captured by Z 5 is brighter at the same parameter setting.The auto focus works well too.

I just bought a refurb RP for $600. And a refurb 24-105 f4-7.1 for $120. I would have preferred the Z5, but for that money, I'm OK with the RP. Looking forward to upgrading to the R5 one day.

I have a Z5 and I am wondering if I should get a RP for low light autofocus because Z5 hunts in low light.

Canon RP is lovely camera with 50/1.8, but doesn't make a lot of sense with any expensive (means big and heavy) lenses. The last thing you need shooting 70-200/2.8 is some tiny barely visible thing attached to the end of lenses, which is supposed to be you camera. Even 24-105/4 completely dwarfs it.

I enjoyed this video. It was fun to listen to and see you in action and hear the delightful verbal rapartee. "You always way that, when you lose." lol

I own the Z5 and think it is the most under rated comera in the Nikon line.

Canon lenses always were and will be superior and that's all.

I just bought a used RP with a 24-105 EF F4 L for 950$. A good price I think. But the Z5 seems to be clearly the better camera.

Tony and Chelsea I'm sure this is not the first time you've had somebody write in about this. I'm a faithful fan of you both. But if you, Tony, keep giving Chelsea the run around about how your photos and choices of gear are going to be so much better I will totally side with the Chelsea followers. You both play off of your bantering rather well and that gives personality to your channel. But if you, Tony, really think you are so advanced, I would say that you are overlooking the amazing value, of the amazing partner and ratings getter, that you are lucky enough to have, and I think you should value that over any other part of your business. Lately, Chelsea is stepping forward with her faux acting gigs and attracting sponsors and viewers like crazy. She has my vote for the MVP of your channel!

Bet if you used a different lens on the Nikon the images could have been sharper. I can't say one is a winner over the other just that I've been in the Nikon camp for a long time.

I could use some mentoring advice. I always want something better than what I have. I have an m50 with the canon 22mm f/2 and the nifty fifty with the viltrox speed booster, and a canon ef-s 55-250 STM zoom. I am happy with what I have probably because I don't know what I am missing.What should I aspire to? What camera could I eventually get that I would think how much I was missing. I am considering to get the viltrox ef-m 23mm f1.4 lens, but that would just be in support of my m50 instead of upgrading my camera. What do you think of my way of thinking. Oh yeah, I shoot video and photos for fun and to have videos of my grandchildren. I am not a professional, although I probably could be, since I know a lot and take pretty good video and photos. FYI: I also have thé mini 2 drone. Help me decide.

The articulated screen is the deal breaker, especially for tripod work or product photography. The SD card is unnecessary with Canon EOS Utility...I haven't removed my card since I uploaded the EU13 utility.

I like the RP's articulating screen. Not to take pictures of myself (God forbid!) but to shoot over a fence, or between bars in a cage, say in a zoo, or to get shots near the ground while bending, etc. Just pointing and hoping I'll get the right shot may be fine, if it's a static shot, but if there's any movement - like animals, people, vehicles, etc. then articulating is the way to go!

Nikon z5 body still about $300 more than the RP, but it has a few more features than RP, but I agree there are pros and cons to both. Canon has the nice side flipping screen for vloggers, while buyers of a Z5 or any Z could add a small 5 inch monitor on top for self vlogging content creators. Point to Canon unless you prefer the tilt screen of Nikon. What is missed is the extra in body 5-axis stabilization IBIS of Nikon with Z lenses for video capture while walking, which would outperform the RP for run and gun video. The RP has electronic stabilization instead which helps.

Funny to see th Nikon Fan boys and girl rage at everything not good about the Nikon. Just have a shoot with the RP and en Z5 myself. And RP won Easy on Sharpness aswell as perfect Focus. Both with the Pro 85mm Lens on it aswell as the 50mm f1.8 .. Just to bad RP did not get the 2sd slots and Better battery.
