Kenny replace the thermostat with a oem before putting it back together. It is a big labor charge by itself.

Kenny, thank you for the update!
Do you think a head sealer would buy some time?

0 signs of water in the cylinder. There would be at least some noticeable change in the consistency of combustion buildup in a leak area.

Better off dropping the subframe. Once you pop that top. Here in Southern California all the plastic, loom, relays, hoses, are all heat checked and crumbles apart. Extremely expensive parts..

Saw people from their home country MEX use two combo open box wrenches with vise grip clamping the box sides together.

The first time I heard of a 5 cylinder was my brother bought an Audi and it had one. Was like an 85 or somewhere in there model year and already electronically fuel injected. It was terribly reliant on perfect vacuum pressures as it wouldn’t run at all when the plastic boot for the air intake cracked and a mechanic packed the crack with plastic wrap and wrapped it and told him to order a new one when he got back where he was going. Was a good driving car, plenty enough power and torque. I wonder if they made carbureted versions of that engine. And if it would perform in a rear wheel drive front to back orientation.

You wont have any of that nonsense with an EV.
I guess you guys still think you can run ICE cars forever. Give it 10 years and gas cars will be illegal.
You guys have not realised that yet.

When I replaced the hydraulic lifters in my 5.7 litre Chevrolet LS1 V8 engine in my car,I cleaned the cylinder head gasket mating surfaces on both the engine block & the cylinder heads with aluminium oxide sandpaper so I wouldn't scratch the surfaces,I basically used that kind of sandpaper which wasn't harsher than the aluminium alloy mating surfaces.

It's a 2002 model engine which means that MLS steel cylinder head gaskets were fitted & I ordered a set of OEM cylinder head gaskets on eBay for $110 AUD including postage which is a very good deal because there were aftermarket gaskets which cost more.

I refrained from using the graphite impregnated cylinder head gaskets which were used on the 1998-1999; model engines because it would've been more difficult to clean the mating surfaces,AFAIK those gaskets were still used in 1999 when Holden started to bolt them into the VT series 2 Commodores in Australia.

They are a.different engine in the Commodore to the 1998-1999 engine which could only be honed out to a maximum oversize on 0.004",in Australia, Holden had to bore some of them out to 0.010" oversized & fit oversized pistons & rings because Chevrolet had an problem with the Teflon coating prematurely wearing off the piston skirts on a batch of them which caused excessive oil consumption.

Holden rebuilt or replaced the engines which were affected under warranty,so some of the VT Series 2 V8 Commodores ended up having a 5.8 litre engine instead of a 5.7 litre engine !

Hate to break it to you but you can look it up, if you replace one chain you need to replace both. The new chain being tighter causes the back chain with some wear to populate correlation DTC's. No such thing as a small job on a Volkswagen. Or any other Euro trash.

Don't know if it applies to these vehicles, but a heads up for a VW issue that can cause overheat, maybe blown gasket. 2009 Jetta with the sideways 5. Mystery overheating problem. One radiator hose hot, other cold. Another guy had already done the thermostat, no go. They were considering water pump next, but that involved lifting engine, so I was asked my opinion. I didn't think it was pump since small return line to coolant reservoir was circulating a coolant/steam mix. Steam was concerning!

I did a ton of research and finally found a post by a mechanic that said it was the heater core?!? Seems the buffoon design runs a hose directly from thermostat housing to the core, then to engine. If the core clogs, thermostat never opens! And they made the passages on the core tiny, easily clogged, especially since the coolant is supposed to be “lifetime”. Well since VW might consider 60k mi “lifetime” for their cars, might be accurate, lol.

Core was the fix, and luckily it was late winter time, so never got hot enough to cause more damage. From your vid, the heater hose connections on the firewall look like I remember, so think they are the same. And that fitting on the top one for the little hose will break when you try to disconnect hose.

German engineering proving itself to be backwards. Why does BMW and VW put the chain on the backside .... I remember quoting out an X1 for 28hours of labor.

"Water neck housing"? -can't stand VW for this... you can have one cast part of one part that has four different seals... It's like multiple splices in one wire, you are creating too many failure points in one specific circuit... Too much liability working on them, I guess I'm a wimp!
