I love audiobooks and use most of those apps. Have you heard/tried Librivox? It is a site where people who record themselves reading public domain texts so others can listen to them for free. There are a lot of classics and Golden Age authors on the site and as more expire we will see more being added. 2 downside are the books are classics(so no new releases) and some of the narrators...have.... audio issues (background noise or popping mikes). It is easy to find a couple narrators that are good and look at what else they read.

300 books?! I am impressed, my biggest year was 223 books although most years my count is 80-100. This year in particular I have had a large increase in audios instead of ebook/hard copies, although my over all count is definitely a smaller year.
Thank you for pointing out Scribd. My dad has audible (the whole family uses his various accounts) but as you pointed out it doesn’t have as good value if I don’t want to buy the books. 100% LOVE my library in all ways, we used to spend up to 3 days a week there when I was a kid. I was very annoyed to find out this week that Overdrive is being discontinued in favor of Libby, I know it is technically the same service but the app is nowhere near as pleasant to use.

I don't listen to audiobooks as often, but I'm trying to get back into them. Personally, I would like to own my audiobooks because sometimes I will get distracted and not finish something in time before it goes away. I use my local library because it has a decent selection and newer titles I honestly don't mind the waitlist because I have such a massive TBR list. And a pro with the library titles is you can simply burn them to your computer and save money that way if you want to keep the audiobook. Though one of the major cons is that not everyone treats library property the same way. And sometimes a cd can have a scratch, so the story skips and you miss some information. But if that is the case you can always get the preloaded audiobooks or the downloaded one from the library.

I love owning my books about 9 times out of 10 after finishing a book I restart a book I've already finished rather than starting a new one despite having 10 books on my tbr that are also already on my account I am basically always re listening to books i do the same with movies, tv and video games.
If I only ever listen to a book(watch a movie, ect.) once then I didn't like it, that's kinda how I work.
Basically once I get to the point when I clear out my wish list (it's getting smaller a bit faster than its growing) then I can just cancel my subscription and still have access to everything I want and if I don't like something their refund policy is insanely user friendly.

Also one of my favourite authors has specifically commented on audible and says that even when you are using a credit getting a massive discount (his books go for $30 to $70) he still gets a pretty fair deal and he likes working with audible. So I never really have to worry that I'm cheaping out and not supporting the authors I like.

Generally I finish an audio book in 2-4 days most of my books are around 30 hours but a few are around 50 hours. I currently have 35 books in my collection and another 10 that I own but haven't listened to yet I have heard them all about 4-5 times and some of them around 10 times. it's way more useful for my habits to be able to just not have a subscription for a while and basically have all my book needs met for free due to ownership. I keep my subscription going while I have books in my wish list and I cut it off when I don't and any books (super rare for me) that cost less than a credit I just buy. It's a fairly good system for not spending too much

How Have I never watched this video of yours? I have audible and have always used audible and I find that I do reread some of the books that I own, plus I love their sales. I also use overdrive, RB digital and Hoopla from my library which generally keep me going. Now with the offer from Scribd I’m just about to try it out so I’ll let you know. I’ve also thought about librofm to support my local indie. I have 4 different libraries on my overdrive as well-oops!

I Love using the library for my audiobooks! My son is a librarian and he just drops them off on his way home from work 😂, no gas wasted, no traffic jams! Where we live (Tampa Bay area FL) many of the libraries are "connected" so if one doesn't have it in stock they'll just deliver it to your closet library for pick up. My son actually brought me an apparently rare book last month that came from another part of the state🥺. Considering I'm basically homebound I guess taking and teaching my kids about the library as children turned out to be a good thing😂

Very useful thanks. I have Audible, but the interface is a bit lacking. Also, I was surprised you can only have one book a month. I thought it would be like Spotify. Sounds like Scribd is more like that. You've got to wonder who came up with the name "Scribd" though? Got to be a better name than that.

I use both Audible and Scribd. If a book is not available on Scribd, or if it is a book I want to own, I buy it at Audible. Audible also has great sales and good Daily Deals, I used to use Kobo but gave it up after I had used Scribd for a while. I find the audiobook selection at my local library (I am in Tasmania) to very poor.

I am currently signed up for 30 days free (Scribd) and I am I am not finding the books I now want but I have seen others I didn't listen to before and I am super excited. I need to put some money on my Paypal account in order for me to pay for membership in November thank you so much, I feel so much better as I was losing my mind after I lost two interesting books yesterday by Linnea May. So many good points! I use Audible, Scribd, Libby/Overdrive, AND Hoopla. I have a strange addiction to audiobooks! The Audible subscription is newer for me and I really just did it so I could get some of the Amazon exclusive audiobooks (titles by Sarah J Maas and Leigh Bardugo mostly). I guess it's cool that I "own" these titles and I can re-read them again whenever I want but I think once I get through the exclusive books I'll probably cancel. Much like you I'd say I consume about half of my books via audio. Though my monthly total is closer to 8-12 books a month.

I listen to a ton of audiobooks (about 10 a month) and mainly use Audible and Overdrive. I get one credit a month and look at Audible as my "book of the month club", except I get to choose from their whole library. I occasionally get the daily deals and love their sales, which you also only get access to as a subscriber. I do occasionally unsubscribe from the membership for a few months, especially if I don't know of any new audiobooks coming out I want to get. I've been saving my credits for November, when soooo many good books are being released, but will probably cancel after that until the spring.

Overdrive is awesome and my library has a huge audiobook selection. I'm fortunate that I also live in a large city with a big library system.

I've tried Scribd a couple of times, but I get cut off (for the rest of my subscription month) from most of the titles I want after two books (most recently, one of those 2 was a backlist 1996 title). I find it frustrating that I never know what books will be available. They say it has to do with agreement with publishers, which I get, but not being able to figure out the system drives me crazy. Sorry about the rant. It works well for some people, but not for me. I'm not saying I'll never use it again, because I probably will, but it's not my first choice.

Oh, and a tip for Scribd! If you aren't sure you're going to like an audiobook, don't download it to your device. You can listen to a certain percentage from their site and it won't count against your limit if you decide not to finish it. If you download it to your device, it does, even if you don't finish it.

I use overdrive the most bc its free and I luckily live in the big city of Austin so we have a wide selection. I do also have an audible subscription that I got at the most minor of discounts and only so I could have certain books that just weren't available on overdrive. I listen to audios while I work so I tend to listen to about 3-5 a week. They are def a big part of my reading diet. Love them!
