I think it is possible to portray modern war more accurately in EU4. You want battles to last a lot longer to emulate frontlines rather than actual battles packaged with some skirmishes. Then you want major powers to be capable of fielding larger armies, but decrease their supply limit so units are spread out more. Motorization and Mechanization should maybe decrease supply limit since modern armies really require a lot of resources to function, but massively improve performance. Maybe you can make motor/mech special unit types with higher cost, but significantly lower shock and fire damage.

The African colonial nations are not only available in later scenarios.

EU4 Germany can kick butt. Perhaps the easiest way of a world conquest is to start as Austria & form HRE. Vassals are crap if you want to send them beyond Ottomans but just unify at that point lol
