I live in a terrace house which is about sixty years old and the pipes are probably copper! My issue is that everytime I flush the upstairs toilet, I can hear and feel vibrations in the upstairs pipes. It feels like the pipes are rattling and noisy for about five minutes. Any ideas of what happened and how it can be solved?

Thanks Roger, it is really helpful. I got a noisy problem where was around unvented hot water cylinder in airing cupboard when I turned on every single hot tap. Is it possible the white expansion vessel fault? Many thanks.

Could water hammer eventually lead to failure in any joints in the home or is that shock unlikely to lead to that?

The pipe feeding my cold water storage tank vibrates when I use the taps on my bath (and only these taps). If I pull the pipe slightly it stopped so I think it only needs securing (I couldn’t see any securing clips) what type of clip should I use?

Roger great video, what about mains cold only whooshing when any or one cold tap is open, part open seems worse? To give idea of noise if listening to radio on an iPhone I cannot hear it unless on full volume, in kitchen which is below the open bathroom tap.

I have a cold water supply that comes directly off the mains and is therefore fairly high pressure and flow rate (I live in Aberdeen).
If I leave the water supply to the house wide open, I have seriouse water hammer problems all over the house.
Plus, if the taps are opened wide in error, you get a tidal wave coming out of the sink and a sink overflow that can not cope (kid proof everything- even taps).
If I just crack open the main valve to reduce the flow rate to the house, I solve the water hammer (and drowned kids), but now I have "hot shocks" in the shower when any of the cold taps are turned on in the kitchen (kids are evil).
But I was more concerned about the main water valve. It is the only means of shutting off the water to the whole house and the noise coming out of it, would suggest it will get "washed out" fairly quick.
Only solution I could see was to have throttling vlaves at all the cold water "deliveries".
That is three throttling valves in total - Loft; bathroom; kitchen
So I have good sensible water supply to everything coming from the mains. Great. Water hammer gone, floors dry.
Except for one thing. That whooshing noise as the water passes through the throttling valves.
I wondered if you had any thoughts on how to remove the noise. Something like a throttling/baffle tube or similar that could be installed at those throttling valves.
I could try a pressure regulator but it would be difficult to install here, and we might get back into the excess flow rate situation again, (which would likely give us water hammer once more).
Thoughts anyone?

Roger the man as always, teaching me for free! Got to ask tho, did we miss faulty valves? Sometimes the valve in the stoptap has split and the noise goes after replacement. If i missed it in the video, im sorry.

Roger, a question: a new boiler, installed less than six months ago, is making a resonant sound that vibrates through the exhaust pipe. It last 30-60 seconds when the boiler is at its lowest power (26 BTU). The vendor is saying that this is due to insufficient gas pressure that the utility company is delivering. He measures 7” wc, but says that the boiler requires 11”. The gas company says that 7” is the maximum allowed by city code. The vendor later clarified that gas pressure drops by 3” wc drop upon startup. He is suggesting 11” wc to keep the minimum pressure above 7” in, which he says is necessary due to a negative pressure value that requires a minimum volume. Does this sound right to you? Are there other explanations?

Hi Roger. I have a question but first Thank you for all the videos you post as they always provide clear and easy to understand guidance. My question is this. We have a back boiler currently and on the wall next to the digital controller there are two boxes with the branding heatsavers on the front of them. One is a extra heat unit and the other is a relay. Not sure what either one does if anything? But a couple of times a day one of them makes a terrible winding noise that appears to be lasting longer and longer lol. Have you ever come across anything like this?

Lived here 33 years and in summer the pipe to upstairs started banging. I replaced every tap washer and then the W.C. cistern ball float valve washer. It might go 3 weeks not banging then starts suddenly, not as loud now but very annoying with it's quiet knock, knock, knock sound. I turn off the main stop cock for a few hours and all is okay again, until another few weeks and it starts again.
I'll check the w.c. washer and components for wear. I don't know what else to try.

We have an unvented central heating system with a Viessman boiler and Kingspan hot water cylinder. When we turn on any hot tap in the house (upstairs and downstairs) we get a loud knocking in the pipe work - sounds close to where the hot water leaves the hot water cylinder. Plumbers have changed valves (although these are on the cold water input). Latest valve change saw things fixed for a day or so but we are now back to square one and our plumber is out of ideas…….any suggestions? Hot water cylinder has an expansion tank above…..not sure if this could be relevant???

I have a noise in the bathroom like there is water rushing through the pipes (copper) but even when the taps are turned off. Also have it under the kitchen sink but much reduced sound, plastic pipes here. The water meter outside the door is clattering 24/7. All my pipes are buried under the concrete floors but not a sign of dampness. No DPC under those old floors. Not sure where to start digging..like this for two years...what you think ??

Our problem is coming from next door. usually 6am, 10am and 11pm, sounds like a ships horn, really annoying, we can hear water tap continually turning on and off. Our neighbours deny any noises but the are renting, probably don't want the landlord there. If they can't hear it, they must have demons, they car number plate includes 666.

a few days ago in the toilet downstairs I had installation of insulation valves for both hot and cold water that I didn't have. to do this procedure they turned off the main water. now when I use the tap upstairs bathroom for cold water, flash the water for toilet either up or downstairs or running the cold water for tap kitchen I hears the boiler do a noise like it wants to work something " struggl to start " like a pump on'off .before they makes the change with the isolation valves and to stop all the water could not be heard.

Somebody says can be "backflow"
Or something else....

Please can you help me out to fix this.
