The recruits were brave. Erwin was a leader to admire, put himself on the front line, basically guaranteeing his death. All of this sacrifice to give Levi a chance. Levi stands up there cold, like he doesn’t care, but he truly does deep down inside. He has to stay calm for the mission, and add their deaths to his list. He stopped the beast titan, but didn’t kill him. It’s the burden that haunts him. Their sacrifice he couldn’t avenge right there. Erwin was a necessary evil. It’s all a sad predicament where everyone loses.

My theory Erwin sent and lead hundreds of scouts to their deaths, if he was brought back he wouldn't be handle to attone for them all

If Erwin had survived instead of Arwin, it's unlikely Eren, Floch, and the others would have revolted. He has a perfect combination of charisma, authority, and ruthlessness that none of the other scouts like Levi, Hange, and Armin can match.

I am one to say watching anime in japanese is and will always be the way to go. But this is one of the very few scenes that is better in english, rather than japanese. Everyone should experience this scene in english.
