Tricksters are foils to the folk heroes who're strong and noble. Tricksters are usually weak but resourceful animals who can't win with strength or beauty so they must be clever and swift. Most people were weak or poor throughout history so an underdog outwitting the powers that be will always have a place in our society.

Entertaining and educational, but you left out Krishna, the Hindu trickster God. He stole butter, and also broke pots looking for food. One time, he also stole the gopi's clothes and made them come out of hiding.

I need one of those collaborative anime projects (like the Animatrix or that Batman one) about Anansi.

Personal favorite are Elegua, Exu and Pomba Gira.

My mother went on a trip to Arizona and bought a Kokopelli doll. After my sister was born she gave it to a friend. After her two sons where born she gave it to my uncle and his girlfriend. They then managed to have my twin cousins despite being in their mid 50s. my uncle then snuck it into his friend's truck and shipped it off to north Dakota. Don't know where it is now.

I want someone to explore the name Jack in nefarious trickster characters. Jack o' Lantern, Jack in the box, Spring heeled Jack, Jack the ripper, Jack be nimble. Jack always a trickster.

The wischechak in my culture was responsible for creating the marks on birch tree because after he stole an old woman's fish, he got scabs for it as "karma." He peeled off his scabs and slapped them on the birch trees.

My favourite trickster figure is probably Odin. It's weird how modern people try to assort specific roles to each character, thereby making Loki THE trickster while completely ignoring that mischievously tricking others is at least 95% of what Odin does. Speaking of which, great video, but the assertion that Loki is the only Norse god with a sense of humour is WAY beyond weird.

I am often not too fond of trickster gods due to their childish cruelty at times. But I do appreciate wit well used and the willingness to be made the fool to get what they need. Prometheus I find to be a more tame trickster so I like him, Hermes as a kid is an icon for stealing Apollo's herd, I just like the way spiders look and think Anansi is pretty fun and chill for the most part so I actually like him too.

It's interesting my dad told us a little about Brare Rabbit 🐇. Born 1935, so called white person. Wonder where/how he picked up those stories.

I believe there are still people who worship the gods of their ancestors, believing in their stories and continuing with the worship to this day. (I love both Anansi and Sun Wukong, especially the versions in American Gods (the show) and in The Forbidden Kingdom.)

Trickster God and fellow friend to humanity Hermes is my favorite. He both an embodiment of athleticism, cleverness, and kindness.

Zora Neal Hurston did a lot of great ethnography work in the south and in the carribean,1 character I always found fascinating was "clever john" or "Johnny."

My favorite tricksters would be bugs Bunny the roadrunner of course and Loki.

Love all the trickster deities, spirits, fairies, and just plain ol' tricky heroes, from Kokopeli, Loki, and Hermes, to Leprechauns, to Robin Hood, to Freakazoid. Love seeing a clever character put one over on the powerful.

In brazilian folklore we have a trickster, Saci-pererê, he is not a God, but a boy that lives in the forest, has only one leg and loves to prank people

It struck me that Morgan le Fay is a trickster - initially a healer, later an antagonist of King Arthur, tho' even in that latter myth she is one of the queens who takes the wounded Arthur to Avalon for healing (depending on which version one reads, Merlin could also be a trickster). Also Renart/Reineke the Fox, fairies, Arlequin/Harlequin, Shakespeare's versions of Puck and Ariel, and I've known a few "Coyotes".

The original Flash, Jay Garrick, was also somewhat an adaptation of Mercury. His fast wit and superspeed let him foil a lot of evil plans after all.

In my personal opinion, one of my favorite tricksters from Japanese pop culture is Impmon from Digimon Tamers. Even though his pranks and mischievous nature were actually a cover-up for deeper negative feelings, I could easily tell from the instant he showed up on screen that this purple devil-like Digimon was a trickster god for the digital age. Another good example of a modern-day trickster? Cut Man and Clown Man from the "Mega Man" video games. Although both Robot Masters aren't very tall in terms of height, they outsmart their opponents through trickery and their wit. In fact, both of these robots weren't even bad guys to begin with. Cut Man was created by Dr. Light to fell timber while Clown Man worked at an amusement park providing entertainment to visitors.

My favorite "trickster" is from the overlapping luck deities: Greek Tyche. I like her because history has made her out as Lady Luck, the Fickle Finger of Fate, and a straight out joker. Personally, I interpret this set of contradictions as her being anti-fate, essentially a patron of Free Will: she sets up points where destiny can branch, so good, bad or strange "luck" depends on our skills and choices.

I think the trickster gods were very relevant in mythologies where the concept of Good & Evil didn't exist. Many gods had both positive and negative sides, creative and destructive, and so on. And a god with an affinity for mischief and chaos makes a perfect troublemaker, so these are often the antagonists... but not always. And I LOVE that fluidity.

Charles de Lint wrote of the Crow Girls. I have loved how they embodied the trickster spirit ever since I first read about them.

I seen 2 UFO’s when I was like 17 .. they were white like the tic tacs but the occupants seem to be annoying and playful like peek-a-boo.. I didn’t see them fly anywhere they just dim in like a lightbulb…. I think if you read exodus even the Abrahamic god is a bit of a trickster. When the aliens show up they will be the creatures from these myths

Anansi & The Pot: Anansi horded so much of the wisdom that he could not see the simple solution to his problem of how to hide it.

My cat is named Loki. And yes he does cause mischief and likes killing lizards and birds when he should NOT be doing. I love him either way.
