Death by a thousand cuts. Perfect way of explaining it. I think a lot of people think everyone switches to Sony because cause of “marketing” but they’re truly just giving us more bang for our buck.

I love Cohem Castle (and the little towns it's surrounded by). The views of the river Mosel from up there are fantastic! I just recently bought the R6mk2, I've been a Canon girl ever since I made the switch from film to digital wayyy back when, but you have peaked my interest in checking out Sony as it's been now more than a few times I have heard of the great advancements of that system. It's just so hard to step out of that box that you know so, so well. Anyway, great video & great vibe. New subscriber!

Sony might be great, but my NINE L lenses say I stay with Canon (my R5 and R6-1).

Canon has the unicorn lenses. The 28-70 f2 has no counterpart. A lot of people don't realize that f2 is twice the light of f2.8. The 10-20 f4 lens is a unicorn. It's autofocusing and is rectilinear. There is a major difference between even 10 mm and 11 mm. If you want to dabble into telephoto without breaking the bank, you can get the 600 or 800 for under $1k each.

I know it's not a fair comparison at all but for a while I was using a 20D while my brother had a Sony A6000, I honestly much preferred my 20D just because of the images it produced and especially the color but I can definitely see the appeal to Sony cameras just based on their beginner level cameras. I just got a 6D and I can see how Canon has changed over the years, I even sometimes prefer the 20D over my new one in some situations.

Great video! I’ve got the a7RV as well and it’s a great hybrid camera. I am very interested in the a9iii and will hopefully get my hands on it when it becomes available in Australia.

I like trying new things. I've owned the OG A7III (sold it). I've owned the GH5S (sold it). I've owned the R5C (sold it). Currently using a Canon R5 and a Fuji X-H2S. Love them, like all the other cameras I've used and owned. I don't get the brand loyalty tribalism.

I do agree with your overall point. Sony in the past 4 years has really stepped up their game and has given their customers what they want and Canon seems overall stubborn in their ways. The banning of 3rd party lenses and the abysmal slow releases of native RF class is the most annoying thing for me.

Without watching the video I already spotted the switch to Sony from a mile a way :)
But enjoy your new Journey with it ! great camera. I Concider the A7 C II / R but more leaning to the C , I want 61 mega pixel , but I really don't need it.
I already have the Z9 with 45 , and it's a beast of a camera that can do it all , just heavy for general use like street photgraphy (can you imagine doing street photgraphy with a Z9 ? heavns no!! ) but for all my needs it's my work horse!
The A7 would be the light - Go to setup for when the Z9 is impractical .

I also have an S5 II (not X) but I am thiking of selling it , I just don't like it for some reason not sure why .
It's a great camera , but I can't seem to connect to it.
Maybe I made a worng lense choise , got a sigma 24-70 2.8 it makes the setup a nightmare to balance on my RSC2 , which was one of the main reasons I got it.
The sigma is front heavy , and the S5 has a large Viewfinder so it's a pain to balance.
This could be a reason but I am not sure , I am on a fence here -
- Get another gimble like RS3 pro / 4 when it's out or Zhiyun CRANE 4 for the S5 or maybe even the Z9 as well .
- sell the S5 + lense and get the Sony A7c which would most likly balance on the RSC2 .. and be a lightwight but powerful setup decisions decisions...

Did you end up going to Neuschwanstein castle? I had no idea Cochem had the oldest castle. This looks beautiful and I must go!

Might have some buyers remorse in the next few months as Canon is rumored to announce the R5 MK 2 & the long awaited R1… I would’ve held out to see what those cameras offer before making the switch to Sony.

The A7RV is a weird camera to start with for video. You have to choose between bad rolling shutter and crops in 8k and line skipped 4k. DR is not on the same level as other Sony and Panasonic cameras.
Something like the Nikon Z8 would be a much better hybrid camera at a very similar price. Only disadvantage might be the lens selection.

If I wanted to creat content for a living I wouldn’t consider Canon at all. And I’m a big Canon fan. It’s the direction they are taking like Apple. However Apple has been and will be more successful. Apple despite their proprietary strategies has products that are used by all kinds of consumers. So I don’t get why Canon doesn’t want to be competitive.

Hey man, sometimes you’ve got to vote with your wallet. I’m getting back into photography and videography in major way after being gone due to some hardships. And I would call myself canon shooter, but when I bought my most recent camera, I ended up going with a used 7a7iii, even though I could’ve spent a little little bit more and gotten something like an R8, which has superior auto focus, 10 bit color for video, a lot faster read out speed, and finally a lot more frames per second. Also, they’re not opening up the lens mount in any meaningful way, I plan on buying a 35 to 150 F2-2.8, this isn’t available on the RF line. Cannon has some objectively amazing lenses that are not available on any other lens system, when you prevent the other unique lenses from other manufactures from being on yours, it makes it worse experience. Not everyone can afford three to $5000 lenses.

But what it’s truly missing that was important for me, was dual card slots. Objectively I believe Canon has better software, I think they’re auto focus in their lower end cameras, are just as good as their higher end cameras. Yet they seem to cripple their cameras in the most objectively worst way. I don’t need all the features from an R6 mark two in the R8, but for goodness sakes, at least give me dual slots even if one’s a microSD card. Nikon is the brand that’s doing the best job at balancing features imo, they just are behind in their auto focus.

Ultimate I looked up and said I can buy a Sony A7iii, start getting lenses and when I need to move up to having a camera that has better color for video, I can just buy a FX 30. Because after really looking at it, it is cheaper for me to buy an FX 30 once I need it then to go with a canon camera because of their poor lens selection. (and I know that EF mount lenses can mount effectively natively with the adapter. But to me, that’s a little bit irrelevant)

What a time to be alive!
If I told even 7 years ago that you could buy a camera that offers external Pro Res and Blackmagic RAW and a whole host of other pro level cinematography features, for just over $2,000 you wouldn't believe me.
And yet, here we are!
ALL of the camera companies are knocking it out of the park. All of them!
And because of that, there isn't really a wrong choice anymore...except if you're buying a Pentax for video 😋
But the truth is that we are all blessed with the unbelievable standard of camera technology available to us now!
Is this the golden age of camera tech? I think it is.

Long live the golden age of camera technology!

You know, I have that feeling of happiness because, they really asked for it, there are many photographers and videographers coming out of the canon ecosystem, They are losing a lot of market share due to their very offensive strategies towards the final consumer, I believe that the losses are already more than palpable and there will come a point where they find themselves with the Actually, today you can be the market leader but if you really do things wrong people will go the other way, or tell that to Apple when they decided to remove so many ports from their MacBooks for so long,In the end they ended up implementing them again, And I'm curious why you didn't just stick with your Lumix s5ii as your main device, didn't it have all the features you needed to have it as your main device?

The only problem I have with Sony is that their lenses won't work on any other camera, because the flange distance is too short. You can put your Canon lens on your Sony, but you can't put your Sony lens on your Canon, or any other camera. So if you spend $2500 on a Sony lens, you can only use it on your Sony. If you buy a $2500 Canon lens, you can use it in just about any camera with the right adapter.

I’m on the bridge on thinking of doing the same in the near future; I’m on the R6 II and still fairly early in my career, I’ve put money into the RF eco system but have been eyeing Sony for some time now.
It’s really hard just due to hauling it all over… but may just do it soon

With the new menus, does it allow to change the white balance taking a picture of a grey card when using a custom mode?
My A7 IV doesn't, and that is reason enough for me to avoid using it for video 😢

Truth is any camera system can make great images and every camera system can make crap images. I'm in the Canon ecosystem because I'm heavily invested and will stay there because no one is sponsoring me. That said, I'm thinking about building a Fuji film XT kit. I like. the form factor and their color science.

If switch system is just as easy as sell the camera and buy a new camera, I would be switch system every year that a new camera from different brand come out. The reality is swtich system is a pain. You have to take pic of every lens and list them on ebay or other site and it takes times to sold them with siginificant discount than original price you paid. Then you need spend a lot on new lens. The process lose a lot of money and takes a lot of times as well. Unless there is really something I could not do that I could do with the new brand that really impact my work, I woild not switch. Or you can invest in another system that you can simply adapt your current lens. Like if you have canon ef lens, you can adapt to Panasonic L mount. Then it is mush easier to just buy a L mount camera.

If I say anything negative about Canon in Canon groups, they assemble with torches and pitchforks. But I feel like I can say it here. Canon is looking like they’re on a downward trajectory with the RF mount and mirrorless. While I certainly still prefer Canon and I’m very happy with everything I have from them (for the most part), their stubbornness of not allowing 3rd Party glass dramatically influences the entry barrier for many shooters who can’t afford Canon L-series lenses…and their low level grey ring lenses aren’t really that great in the grand scheme of things. I hear a lot about CLOG2 and I just don’t get it…CLOG3 is just fine for me and I’ve used it on plenty of big commercial shoots and national television commercials. That said, I don’t understand why Canon won’t give us CLOG3 on higher models like the R3 and the R5C. It makes no sense. But I will say that it’s not exactly fair to compare the A7RV with the R6II. They’re not in the same price bracket at all. The R5 and R5C would be the competitors to that camera and stand up quite well against it. The R5’s overheating issues just don’t seem to happen anymore. We shoot 4K60 all day on set in a hot warehouse sweating our asses off an no issues at all. Your decision may prove untimely with the R5 Mark II and R1 set to be announced early this year. But all that matters is if you bought something that you’re happier with and gets the job done.
