Mine rather deleted the whole circle and kept with the arc that passes through the rectangle and the rectangle

Personally, I would have gone back to your original way, except after using minus front to subtract the rectangle, I’d use the Direct Selection tool to select and delete the bottom two anchor points of the rectangle cutout. Then all that would remain is the stroke circle with a broken open path.
