Why Cheap Cars Are Disappearing

Glad I bought my cheap base model subcompact a few years ago when they were stilk around and kicking.

My younger relatives get a new car every 3-4 years. When I was a kid, only the owner of a bank could do that. My first two Honda Civics I drove for 10 years, and 8 years respectively. Paid loan, and still drove them up to 100k miles. They were great, and I loved them!!! The reasons for a change in the auto market is because of social changes and not economic or manufacturing reasons. They are giving the people what they want.

People seem to forget that the car companies like Ford, Volkswagen and Fiat got started making cars for the masses. The Model T and A, The Beetle and many models by Fiat. Now the car compaiies have forgot about the middle and lower income transportation needs.
Too much unneeded tech are built into cars today also.

We need another Henry Ford. Now we know that Mr. Ford had his faults. Da, who doesn't. But back to the point. The reason I red that Ford made the, finally, Model T was so the poor farmers could have a vehicle that would make his farm more productive, efficient. When he saw that the price was too high, he cut it , the price that is, to almost half. Now that ... who owns, started Tesla Motors. It seems that his biggest problem is: "the thing, 3 letter word, that he is, should start with an upper or lower case "g(G)"?

Never underestimate the stupidity and gullibility of the American consumer. Value-wise cheaper cars with less tech tend to be better choices budget wise than a vehicle with a whole bunch of expensive technology that's going to depreciate quickly depending upon the vehicle over a couple of years.

Well, its unfourtunate, that US car maker lobby has so much political power over the market. In Europe, you can get a new, usable car $15600(AC, LPG/petrol, 40-60MPG... And glad from James May, bacause its a Dacia Sandero).

Get rid of dealerships and sell straight to customer would be best. If not, Americans stop buying and prices drop.

The new cars are overengineered and so reliable. Leaning towards a smaller engine with turbo is not a very good idea. I drove the new Accord, and it was a sad experience. New cars have way too many unnecessary sensors. Electric cars are now facing problems such as the electrical grid incapability of the cities. Teslas are very cheaply made. Look at the interior. Some of them use window controllers from the old mercedes models, transmission operating system, low quality of the interior plastic parts.

Reason 1 - GREED.

Plenty of good used cars and trucks for desert price . 1998 to 2005 Toyota Camry and Sienna with low miles under 120,000 . Presently driving 2002 Camry and 1990 Toyota 4 runner . Each drive as they did when bought them 12 years ago . I don’t need to be show off or trendy .

Impatience? Why should one wait for their car to catch up to 20 year old technologies?

There's is not 1 car in the market below 20k in america i should know been looking for a brand new car for my daughter for a year now. The cheapest car right now is 21k is the nissan versa no other car is below this price not hundai or honda etc. Average price is 27 to 33k. The guy here saying the nissan versa starts at about 14 k is a lie all cars are mark up in july 2023 trust me i know.

I loved my sporty, affordable little 2015 Toyota Yaris SE hatch 5-MT (w/TRD rear sway bar added) & hated when it was killed by a distracted driver in late 2019. I walked away fine though. Sadly, Toyota discontinued the authentic Yaris after model year 2018 here in the USA, though did offer a Mazda2 sedan (& later Mazda2 hatch) rebadged/disfigured as a Yaris through 2020. I wish Toyota, Honda, Mazda, etc would bring back the subcompact segment to the USA (Yaris, Yaris Cross, Fit, Mazda2, CX-3, etc.), & in some nice/fun/sporty/premium trim levels, & not just as stripped-down, bottom-barrel trim econoboxes.

Screw the industry for saying "well they wouldn't sell" yeah right... if you put an actually decent product (similar to Accord/Camry) as your subcompact Under $10k car, people would buy all of them. All. Of. Them.

While cars are getting ridiculous, Corolla’s have actually stayed just about the same price. In the early 2000s you could get a Corolla for around 6800. That’s around 20k today, and new Corolla’s sell for 21-22k

In India cheap cars are between $2000 to $8000. $20000 is like premium.

That's why Indians kicked American Car brands on the balls

That’ll all change with electric and cheap batteries in the very near future. Basically anyone will be able to make an automobile at that point.
