I realise I said "railway" instead of "railroad" at the end. Apparently I haven't picked up too many American dialect words yet...!
ОтветитьMeanwhile, the Soviet Union had an ICBM train car
ОтветитьThere must be something humbling about traveling like that with a commode chair and single bed, giving speeches at little whistle-stops. Would help to keep presidents (and politics) grounded (literally) and more connected to their constituents and country.

ОтветитьMy dad was on that train, although likely not in this car except for one or two rare instances. When FDR would go to the house in Hyde Park, NY, my dad was always on the train. Once when the president left the written copy of his speech on the train, it was my dad that was sent back for it. This train caused the introduction of the FM Radio mode. Quite simply, AM radio as was the norm prior to this was badly interfered by static. The wheels rolling on the track caused a lot of static. As such, they, the Secret Service needed a radio that was not using the AM mode. FM had been tried in one of the military branches. I think my dad told me it was the army. Once the radio was swapped out for FM mode, no more problems with static. After my dad passed, I was digging through the cedar chest and found an envelope that contained what appeared to be an old calendar holder, sized to fit a suit jacket pocket. Inside, no calendar, but my Dad's White House ID from 1941. On the outside, in gold printing it said simply, From FDR, Christmas 1941.
