A constant struggle against destiny, a cruel unforgiving world, his trauma, and his own inner rage that threatens to turn him into a monster. It’s all constant struggle, but he fights on and tries to do what is right. He constantly falls short and is hurt physically and mentally but still tries to do what is right and protect the people he cares about.

Even without praise and recognition, guts still acts as a protector and a provider. He is a true man.

One of the stand out things about Berzerk at least for me is they actually put SERIOUS EFFORT into getting it's 1700/1800 Europe look down and got it right for a change AND armour isn't actually useless and weapons actually work the way you think they would for most characters. No one hit kill arrows which ARE A MASSIVE PEET PEEVE OF MINE.

I would say Berserk is the greatest manga of all time.

Why? Because it has the many things that stand out from so many manga series. It's really a philosophy itself. I will tell you about a God theory of Berserk.

"God". What is God? In the real world many think God is some one greater than life itself. If you ask a God believer he says,"God is everything". If you ask why he says"It's something humans can't understand". But Berserk handles it differently.

Guts is the manliest of all men. He is a man among men. Guts is not a God believer. He never trust anyone except him and his friends. Even if he is betrayed by his friends he never blames anyone other than himself. Even if shits happen he will just accept it. If you are a God believer you will definitely blame God or ask pray. But he never prays he simply take action. The best example is the ending of the Conviction arc. Many who cling to God are died but those who took action escaped the death. Guts took action rather than waiting for some miracle. He simply states that if fire is under your own ass, get the hell up rather than bowing down more to pray. He is really an inspiration. God is something humans created. That is what Berserk tells you.

It is a major theme highlighted in the Conviction arc. It has many themes in each arc. But some manga only tells you a theme that is told again and again and even if it is new it is just on a shallow level. Vagabond and Vinland Saga has good themes. But Berserk has many greater themes. Even Berserk also covers all those themes. That's why...

I think guts can be defined- by the who never quits because he’s following his passion, which is fighting. I think one of the most beautiful moments is the end when he realizes he’s cursed and will be hunted forever. But he’s literally the worst person the godhand and would want to curse…. First experienced Berserk with the 1st anime back in the day. Just loved these characters that are all dmg from their pasts, in this dark world just trying to survive. And just when they find a tiny bit happiness....blam! Such a deep, great tale.
