Great vid, thx! So is HS format higher quality than the S codec? My computer (M1) is fast enough for both. Also is the S-I much better quality than HS? (don;t care about file size ;))

I find that I'm skipping frame rates with XAVC S 4K on my imac 2020 but it's perfect with XAVC HS 4K...any ideas why?

why not use xavc s? a lot of pro users are going to that one as testing it vs the all intra codec is showing no real noticeable difference

That's weird. I'm on a MacBook pro-2019 specd out, and the only one that runs somewhat smoothly is XAVC HS 10 bit 420. Everything else frame drops like crazy!

For best quality, would you use H264 or H265 at the highest bit rate?

SI is still very large files. I’ve found the S to work just fine with just as good of picture as the SI

The 2019 and up MacBook pros & the 2020 iMacs with the upgraded graphics card have encoding for H.265 420 10 bit and should edit smoothly. However nothing has encoding for H.265 422 10 bit atm, besides those iPads. I edited Fuji XT4 H.265 420 10 bit very smoothly on my 2019 MacBook Pro

I don't have a SD card that can handle XAVC S-I, and a V90 card seems hard to find at the moment/expensive. Would this be an east solution? Use 2 cards, card 1 set to XAVC-HS, card 2 set to record proxy files.

I got this hint from Max Yuryev. The biggest thing slowing down editing in the 4.2.2 not the H.265. Computers built within the last 2-3 years have encoders and decoders for h.265 that help out quite a bit. When you use the 4.2.2 the GPU won't help you process the editing. 10 bit and h.265 isn't much of a problem, but the 4.2.2 is making my laptop really struggle and my desktop slow down quite a but I'm using Windows 10 though. After watching Gerald Undone's video about 4.2.2 vs 4.2.0 he shows it is almost impossible to tell the difference between 4.2.2 and 4.2.0. The big difference is 8 bit vs 10 bit. So try using 10 bit 4.2.0 until you have a better computer.

You need to use the 4:2:0 10bit h.265 at 100mbps for best decoding speed and good quality. The 4:2:2 version is not hardware accelerated, that's why it's so slow on your Mac. There is no visual difference between 4:2:2 and 4:2:0 (look at Gerald Undone's tests -- no difference), but there is a huge difference in decoding. I wish people stopped going for bigger specs (in this case 4:2:2) and instead knew how to read those specs: neither AMD nor nvidia support 4:2:2 hardware decoding in any format (they only support 4:2:0 and 4:4:4). So 4:2:2 is a bad choice for editing. Not to mention that 4:2:2 requires 20% more bitrate than 4:2:0 to be of the same quality, and Sony simply doesn't give you that at 100mbps (it's not enough bitrate). Also, only the iOS chipsets decode 4:2:2 in hardware, and the brand new Intel laptop gpu (that most editors don't support, and it's still not widely available). So unless you're editing on an iPad with Lumafusion, avoid 4:2:2 like the plague. h.265 10bit 4:2:0 will decode fine on a modern Mac/PC, and 100mbps will be enough for good quality. Avoid 10bit 4:2:0 with h.264 at 100mbps, it's too low quality to cram 10bit at 4k in that bitrate with that old encoder. h.264 in that scenario is only good at 4:2:0 8bit at 100mbps (and only in HLG3 with rec709 color mode -- in slog2/3 you will be losing bits in 8bit).

Convert to Pro res and you'll be fine. you can keep the nice high bitrate and easy to grade 10 bit 422 and get a lot ore latitude from this.

I'm surprised you aren't using your Ninja V with the A7SIII. Ninja V has false colors, and waveform. Also, Prores is much better to edit.

I noticed on my A7siii that both XAVC-HS and XAVCS give me about the same amount of recording time. Given that XAVC-HS has more efficient compression, does that mean it is also higher quality?

The only reason to use the h265 is to save space, you're not going to get any better quality than with h264, in fact, it will probably be a bit worse due to the more aggressive compression.
