Setting up a 10GbE Synology WITHOUT a 10GbE Switch on Synology NAS | 4K TUTORIAL

Could this be a solution for recording, professional audio directly to disk (A Nas), considering it needs less bandwidth than 4K Video?

Hi , can you investigate this scenario.I have direct 10Gb connection to my pc wit synology 1522+.Everything is working ok in windows, but when I boot into WIN Pe boot disc (aomei backupper rescue disc to restore windows OS) I cannon initialize 10Gb connection even if I put drivers of nic into boot disc.Can I use crossover cable instead,because I dont wont to buy 10Gb switch.

Do you have to have a 10 gbps card in your NAS? Could you do the same thing without the card in the NAS to just provide a direct connection to a lightning port on my iMac? That would still be better than running through the Xfinity cable modem, wouldn't it? Thx

Hey Rex, thanks so much for your videos! I got the OWC 10GB thunderbolt 3 Adapter and installed it directly to my Synology 923+ and am running on my MacBook Pro M1 Max. It works for a few seconds and then disconnects. I set is up exactly as you laid out in this video. Any thoughts on why that might be happening? Is it incompatible with the M1? I tried searching on forums and found a few people with similar issues, but am wondering if you don't have this problem with similar hardware. Thanks!

I followed all the steps but I only can connect the service using ip with afp. Would u know why I can only access the nas by afp but not smb?

Thank you man you are so great. This was so clear and easy to understand. I do have a question...when you connected to the server through Mac, I noticed you chose the photography folder...I noticed it's outside of the "home" folder. Does that mean photography is on your nas, or is it somewhere else? I thought you only had the ability to have your media on the nas inside the "home" folder. Thanks for any help and clarification here.

I've followed this setup using my DS1522+ and I'm getting speed like 350 when I copy via SMB! any idea?

I'm using CAT7 cable between the unit and my computer
my motherboard Asus Pro wifi WRX80 has 2x 10gbe ports
Jumpo frames enabled on both sides 9000

Are you able to do this entire process on a Mac? Or do you need a PC to do the first part of the try tutorial?

Hi Will, Thanks for this. I cant seem to access Packages at all. connect by 10Gb and mac ultra connected via 2.5 thunderbolt adaptor to internet. Is there a problem with my system? How would you reinstalle DSM7? I cant access any the package centre saying connection failed. please help

Thank you for this tutorial. I have a DS1621+ directly connected to my mac via a dual 10G network card in the NAS and a OWC thunderbolt 3 10G adapter. I connects and works for a while and then disconnects. The NAS shows the port is active but I cannot ping it or connect via finder. I have to either restart finder or reboot the mac to connect again. Any thoughts?

Hello, my question is that i want to connect TO finder via \\DS1821 cause all my projects are linked under that directory, but to set priority the 10gbe and not wireless connection, i always face issues, some times connect via 10gbe but some others to wireless

Thanks for this--got me set up but still having issues I'm hoping you can help with (because Synology support hasn't been too helpful)

1. I have a DS1522 connected directly to Mac Studio via 10GB Ethernet. I have Internet sharing enabled for Wifi to Ethernet.
2. I was able to mount shared folders (thanks to this video) but none of the Internet-based functions in DSM worked (couldn't connect to Gmail for notifications, couldn't see packages to install, etc.)
3. I connected the NAS standard Ethernet port to my Wifi router and that solved #2
4. But now when I test my read/write speed, I'm not getting the fast transfer speeds I originally had (presumably because it's using Wifi?)
5. I tried changing the service order in DSM to put LAN5 before LAN1 but that didn't change things.

Any ideas?

Followed this to the T and got a Sabrent 5GbE USB3 adapter working with DS1821+ at over 180 MB/s read/write speeds. Thank you so much! 👍I'm confused, though, since it still connects the SMB share through the previous auto-DHCP configuration (the same as the built-in 1GbE ports) via the 10GbE port, but now at the updated speed. I assume this is normal behavior, isn't it?

So with this, you have the direct connection to the PC and still connect the Synologys original port to your router so it's on your network?

I log in fine doing these settings but there is no internet without a switch. It does not share. Synology support also said you have to plugin another ethernet in 1gbe for internet to work in addition to the 10gbe to PC.

Hi Will, once this is set up when you have two 10gig ports..shouldn't I be able to down from DSM any updates or package..i no longer have a connection from synology to internet??

Followed each step with exception of I'm using a W10 pc not mac was looking for windows tutorial if there are any major differences between the 2...it didn't work! running fiber between 1821+ and pc switched to dhcp and boom everything works but am I getting the full benefit same as if I got it to work in manual mode? Im using jumbo frames and see 10000 MTU is set at 9000. Please help if you can or should I just leave it alone since it is "working"?

I like your content, but please look into controlling the reverb in the audio - it sounds like you are recording in the bathroom. Suggestion - put up acoustic blankets on each side of you just out of frame and directly in front of you behind the camera. This will stop most audio reflections from entering your microphone. Anyway, just helpful suggestions - let me know if you have any questions.

1517+ with Synology brand 10Gb card, MacPro with a 10Gb card. Direct cable, a Cat 7. Not getting more that 2Gb transfer, adjusting MTU made no difference. Both are on the Ip settings suggested here and I "connect to server" via those settings. Not sure what else I can try. Not expecting full 10Gb, but figured closer to 4 or so.

It seems a waste to buy a 10Gb switch, I'm thinking a 2.5 would make sense at this point if I can't troubleshoot to get much above this speed.

My Write performance got much worse on my Windows 10 PC.

This is extremely helpful. The only video so far that helps to show that its possible to get the transfer speed. Can I confirm that my home network at 1gbps can still achieve the 10 Gigabit speeds?

So the direct 10gb connect would only be for file transfers between the PC and NAS or will I also get 10Gb internet speed?

Great video. I just installed a compatible dual port 10GBE card into my sinology 1819+. I intend to connect one port to a PC, and the other to a M1max MacBook Pro using the OWC ProDock mentioned in the comments below. Do I have to do anything differently to set up the dual ports? Do they need separate IP addresses? Thanks!

So you had to use wifi to connect your computer to the net. Would the same setup let me use the main ethernet port on my iMac to connect at normal speeds to the router/switch (not via wifi) and a Sonnet 10Gbe via thunderbolt directly to my NAS 10Gbe card?

I'm wondering about those cards.
E10G18-T1
E10G18-T2 (dual port, otherwise the same I assume)
E10G21-F2 (marketed as better for heavy workloads, also dual port)

Hi, what disks and how much do you have in your NAS and what RAID type? I'm planing to upgrade to 10Gbe but your speedtest ia a bit disappointing for me. Hoping to get transfer rates some closer to 1GB/s.
