B Vishnuvardhan asks: Sir, I have a peculiar problem. In the middle of my scalp, I noticed that the volume of hair has reduced drastically. I want to know if I make use of Growth Factor Concentrate (GFC) will it increase my hair volume? Is this a permanent solution? Do you offer this solution? Please explain.


In response to B Vishnuvardhan, Dr John Watts said that Growth Factor Concentrate (GFC) treatment may help increase the volume of hair at some point in time depending upon the stage of hair loss one has.

“Yes, it works but the results depend upon some factors. For example, if you still have baby hair and some terminal hair, you can see some growth of thick hair with GFC treatment. But, if your spot is completely bald, no GFC treatment may work in such a scenario,” explained Dr John Watts.

Explaining the basic difference between PRP and GFC treatment, Dr John Watts told viewers that PRP comes along with platelets and growth factors while GFC relies on only the growth factor in refined and concentrated form.

“This is the reason why one can expect better results with GFC rather than PRP,” he explained.

While answering another query raised by Vishnuvardhan if GFC can lead to hair growth and whether they would stay permanently, Dr John Watts said that results depend on some factors. “It can be answered in both yes and no,” said Dr John Watts in a cryptic response.

He clarified that GFC can provide permanent hair growth if the hair loss in a person is attributed to nutritional deficiency or weight loss reasons or lack of rest or stress but there will be temporary results if one’s hair loss is due to genetic baldness.

“In the first scenario, GFC would show permanent results if one starts taking proper nutrition and rest while in the second situation, there would only be temporary results. Initially, there would be baby hair growth and further hair fall would be controlled with GFC treatment but such results won’t last long,” explained Dr John Watts.

Responding to his final query, he told Vishnuvardhan that there is a state-of-the-art facility available for GFC treatment at Trichos. However, he said that one need not come to Hyderabad solely for GFC treatment as it can be performed by any neighbourhood dermatologist.
