Can they tell from outside the property if you are watching the BBC on a phone - on a laptop - on your tv? In the old days they said they had detector vans going round and they could tell if you were watching and even WHICH room of the house you were in at the time

So what you're saying is any piece of modern technology ie smart phone, laptop, tablet, smart speaker with screen, the kind of item just about all of us have in our homes can leave us liable for prosecution even though there's no evidence that said equipment is being used to watch live TV right?
Simple solution. Do not ever let the scumbags access your property.

There was a major bonus of not having a TV licence during the plandemic - It meant I wasn’t allowed to watch any of the governments live broadcasts, not even hours/days later as it still showed the ‘live’ banner.

Saved me many months of mental anguish not being ‘allowed’ to watch Boris and his minions telling me how I should live whilst they and all the other politicians totally ignored their own ‘mandates’!

I hope you read the comments, I have no way of watching live to I mainly watch you tube, and dvd’s however I have been told if you’re tv can receive live to you need a license. However my car is capable of breaking the speed limit x3 but I don’t have a Entourage of traffic police waiting at the end of my lane they trust me to drive with due care and attention and respect other road users which I certainly do. Please if you have not already covered this issue would you kindly provide insight into this matter. Kindest regards George.

Having a device that is 'capable' of receiving live TV is no proof you 'watch' live TV, I have a fishing rod in my home, I don't need a licence for it unless I am fishing, even then its not for the rod its for the 'act' of fishing.

Could someone clear this up, Are TV licence enforcement officers only as good as a door to door salesman in that they are only there to get you to buy a licence to receive their commission and they are just employees of Capita with no powers under PACE? (Enforcement officer is only a term to scare you) ?

you can actually remove any pre installed apps on a fire tv stick by going onto apps installed on this device, highlight the app and press the 3 lines button on your remote and select remove from the cloud , this will completely remove that app from your device,

Daniel, I would say that 95% of households have a TV, and the mere fact that someone has a TV isn't evidence that they watch live TV so TV Licencing would need further evidence to obtain a warrant. Therefore, if someone that doesn't have a TV invites someone in to prove they don't have a TV , but they have a mobile phone still isn't evidence that they watch live TV. Therefore, by natural Corollary, TV Licencing would have a hard time proving to a magistrate the need for a warrant purely based on the possession of a mobile device. If that was the case, a TV Licence "enforcement officer", could in theory approach anyone in the street with a mobile phone and ask them if they had a TV licence. I'm not disagreeing with you per se, but I don't think a magistrate would give a warrant to TV Licencing purely on the basis of being in possession of a mobile device...... that's getting into very dangerous territory.

OK, all good advice it seems. But do we the public not have to beware? There cannot be many households in the UK that does not have a laptop and/or smart phone, both capable of receiving live TV. But just because we have these machines does not mean we DO receive live TV, in the same way that an inspector visiting your home is not necessarily a murderer, even though has has the equipment (he could strangle you!)!

I have subscriptions on my phone, no tv that have done the occasional live. If a subscription does a live I never watch I do watch it maybe 2 days later because it isn't live anymore it's a catch up so in theory they can't have me for that. That's my thinking anyway. Gave up my licence 2 years ago and had no letters no knocks on the door and this is the way I have done it over the last 2 years. Live programmes are watched days later not as they are being done.

Hi, can you confirm whether the wording of the BBC declaration is legal or not. It expects us to sign to say we will not watch any TV (at least the way we read it) rather than not watching Live TV and iPlayer.

I moved into my rented property in 2021 and immediately declared that I do not need a TV licence. I made the same declaration in 2022 and 2023 and 2024. Never had any issues until I began receiving mail from TV licensing with the incorrect address. They added the words "The Flat" above the name of my property. They were duly contacted in regard to this matter which they have totally ignored. I even received a letter stating that someone at my postcode had watched BBC iPlayer (despite my postcode area having around a dozen properties) and again made loose threats about fines etc.
This letter I totally ignored because at that stage I wanted someone to call whilst I was at home to confront them and revoke their right of access. I had to explain to my wife what these individuals are capable of, and if they arrive at our property, she should call me right away and then insult them in her native language (Thai).
My question is, what can I legally do about the constant misaddressed letters coming to my property as surely this can be classed as harassment?

What is the situation when an employee has iPlayer on his personal phone while at a work premises? Management cannot realistically control if they watch live broadcasts on their own phone during breaks whilst on the premises.
