Ahh, interesting to finally see a JVC model that uses that same shell mould! I have four 1701 Commodore monitors, only one had a mysterious hole in the bottom centre dark brown bezel... Got my answer - it was where the JVC badge would go. Still hunting down other models that use this shell... Behind the Commodore logo and 1701 plate on this same particular shell, are a bunch of holes. Looks like for 2 LEDs, 4 or more buttons and possible an LED channel number display. Would love to eventually find what model and branding was used with that full setup

A question that you think about a Téknika MJ-10 monitor, is it a good monitor?

With CRT's it sometimes feels like the best times to get those are long gone. If you can make a deal with city recycling, you might be able to get some on a budget.
Today you need to hunt for other vintage gems: Plasma and CCFL LCD's. These often have an abundance of retro gaming connectors, and may not CRT accurate, but still an amazing picture quality. Some have really nice upscalers and denoise algoritms. Those PC Engine Soldier games look stellar on a 40 inch plasma over the SCART plug. I found very decent plasma's from Panansonic for 30€ or such.

By the way if anyone wants CRT's they are available for Free weekly on the streets of NYC..no Kidding. Its sad to see the massive waste... I try to pick them up when I can but that is no more that 2, I cant store anymore than that.

There will be millions of CRTs around as when the LCDs started coming in they were dumped en masse years ago. The challenge is to find a good one, especially a 1701 or a 1702 or something similar, as now they will also be getting long in the tooth.

When using a degaussing wand is it okay to have other CRTs nearby? Are other equipment ok to have as well? For instance consoles, VCRs etc.

I never liked the Commodore 1700 series, they do have S-Video, but their tube have a really bad dot pitch and thus have poor resolution. The obvious star is of course the Commodore 1084, but even the 1081 (less connectivity) is a way better monitor than the 1700 series. TVs from the 90s generally have pretty good tubes and electronics and compete pretty with with a Commodore 1084... if they have SCART input... which makes it a mostly European party. Still you could consider to RGB mod a 90s TV, gets you a good retro gaming monitor at a good price.

Man the market of USA for CRT is crazy, in South America you can find any multy region crt TV wide or normal, hd or sd for less than 30 USD or almost free, i think that its because the latest company to close CRT Production was Sony and Philips in Chile, Brazil and Argentina and the were produced till 2010

The CRT tube in the 1701 is pathetic. The darker the shade of grey a CRT TV tube is when turned off the better. If it isn't a Sony Trinitron or Panasonic Quintrix it's going to be crap as far as the 8bit ERA goras. If you are talking SNES/PS1 generation replace Sony with Mitsubishi Diamondtron. I am a TV engineer btw.

For a composite video crt there's not really much reason to spend money. You still can find them on the side of the road, not nearly as commonly as 10 years ago, but I see one out maybe about once every 2 months and I've never found a trash crt that doesn't still work
