Some organizations care a lot about education, so listing education on the top is ok. My first job, the company culture didn't value the degree and they only cared about work experience. My second job, the company cared a lot about high education ,and they will not hire if you don't have a minimum 4_year degree. The third (current) job, the company highly values my degree and pays me a lot more . The forth one very cares about the degree, I am going to have the interview very soon. I always have my education on the top. A lot of tech companies care about education. With high education, you can pick up new skills very quick and less time of training than those don't have.

Thanks Andy ! For all that you do . I applied as a Teacher Assistant position originally. I started to fuss 😮because I was low balled my salary . I left am email to the principal , HR and compensation department. Finally my principal got in touch with me via email and ask me to call her . Once I called her she ask if I can email her a copy of my resume. I did! I just thought that I would get another offer letter with an 😮the original salary that I askask for.. Instead I got an invitation to apply for another position at the same school making 50% more than what I originally asked for. I applied and they immediately offer me the change of position without a interview I am nervous, but I am very happy also with all of your help and your tips!

I think it’s unfortunate that someone can have 20 years of experience but it’s condensed into 5 seconds. Part of which includes an address which has NO BEARING. From what I can tell, you only care about prior companies, and if you like them, you continue to read it. I just don’t see the value in that, I’m just not convinced by your experience but - I guess you are speaking the (sad) truth of recruiters.

If you recently graduated with a masters from an ivy (let’s say Harvard), then should you put it at the top of your resume? There’s no other unobtrusive way to get Harvard at the top of my resume (unfortunately harvard got rid of alumni email addresses for certain graduating years or I’d do that)

Andy is right. It just takes 6 seconds for an employer to either qualify or disqualify you for a job. A useful tool that I use to make eye-catching CVs is Canva. Highly recommended.

Would also just add to make sure you use correct spelling, grammar and spacing and check multiple times. How you write on your CV says a lot about you, and how good or bad you would be as potential employee. You don’t want potential employers to think you are unprofessional.

It seems like resumes are completely subjective. Ive talked to many so called professionals and a lot of them have opinions that contradict one another. You can do a simple template to make sure its not awful, but it'll be bland. Throw some colors in it, it'll definitely stand out. Use colors that pop out, but should be easy read. Who knows, throw a QR code somewhere in their to your portfolio or a recorded video of yourself explaining what you offer. Happy Job hunting.

A typical job post receives HUNDREDS and sometimes THOUSANDS of resumes many of whom are evenly qualified. Most hires are hired for reasons other than their resume.

QUESTIONS:

1. You indicated a strong dislike of a 3rd page. My resume has a 3rd page because my education & certification section dropped off the bottom of the second, as a direct result of having a 30 year history that includes more than one relevant functional area/period. - What I find myself wondering is whether you feel that a 3rd page is ALWAYS an issue, or if there are some situations where it's not a "sin".

The format works if and only if, you can get past ATS to a human reader. These days, the ATS will flatly put this resume format in "reject" category within a second.

This isn’t directed towards Andy; this a general observation. It is so frustrating and insulting that hiring managers are so self-important that they’ll get offended if they think their time isn’t respected yet they don’t respect applicants enough to look at the cover letters and resumes they send in (that took hours of editing and tailoring to the job) if they are not personally riveted by them in 6 seconds or less. 🙄 Absolute clowns. Advice on these topics is also contradictory at times and the “correct way” to present information on application documents seems to come down to the personal preference of the hiring officials. This is impossible for applicants to guess beforehand.

Would it be bad practice to send in 2 formats of the same resume in case one doesn’t blow the HR people’s minds?
