How is this game different from civilization?

Id like you to address some of the most compelling negative reviews of the game. I want to try this game. But for nearly 70$ in cost and dlc thats quite steep for my broke ass. Due to many of the most viewed negative steam reviews i am put off by some of what they say. For example a common complaint is that you cant really surprise the ai. As the ai can just move entire armies across the map near instantly. Another big issue is units moving much faster across water and it being a defensive disadvantage to be near water as units will hyper advance on your position. Or units will ignore roads and just use a lake instead. Things of this nature keep me from getting the game and im worried that i will not like it or i will get frustrated by these and other examples.

I have been playing this game for a year and I'm amazed that it hasn't bored me not even a little bit it's like addictive plus religion and diplomacy is not just there for show like civilization you can actually use them effectively

Sorry but nothing in this promotional video is "interesting" enough to make me buy the game. Hard pass.

Out of curiosity, what are your top 3 4x games?

I only have one question, is the single player AI as bad as every other game in genre? Until that improves i´m not very interested.

Civ IV was my favorite and I'm so mad right now that I missed this gem from Soren! I hope he makes something that's focused on coldwar or post coldwar.

Misleading title. The game is a REMAKE of an old Sierra game called Rise and Rule of Ancient Empires.

Old World is NOT a very good game. It falls flat on its face in the mid game period, and becomes a churn fest of cramming out armies.

Another similar game (Human Kind) is almost as bad but Old World takes the crown for worst game set in this time period

Btw, the soundtrack for old world was written by Christopher Tin, the same guy who wrote the music for the civilisation franchise.

One of the best games I’ve ever played. But the random death of characters sucks.. I played with Greece and it took hours to grow up Alexander. Then, as I could finally use him he just died 2 years later for no reason? I just got the message he died in battle but in fact he didn’t! Just random event .. and other characters literally „dying“ several times in combat, their whole army destroyed.. and like a miracle they managed to survive and turn back home lol! It should be more straight forward, like: if you loose an army led by any Charakter this character should be dead for sure, maybe with a small chance (1% or something) to survive badly wounded

Wdym no games like OW? It looks exactly like Civ, but with worse gameplay.

This has been my favorite new 4x game in such a long time. I hope the devs keep working on it despite how lesser known it is amongst the other popular games in the genre. BTW, the game is apparently a mod developers dream. I can't wait to see what people cook up for it in the next few years!

Thanks PW this video finally got me off the fence and I purchased the game and DLC. I love the eras it covers, being a fan of Civ and Paradox games its a nice marriage between the two.

Recently got this game on sale with the expansion and was a bit bored during the tutorial, but when i finally started playing my first game I immediately started falling in love. Then i realized they dont do future tech and immediately fell more in love, as future tech always disparaged me in the CIV games.

I think my favorite aspect is the fact that theres no tall vs wide, you just have to go wide, but you do specialize cities (high growth, high military, or high civics) while still having multiple types of currency.

It is just a shame that you can only play mediterranean or middle eastern civlisations, no celts or germans.

Wow. Honestly that sounds like a lot of annoying stuff that keeps me from actually playing a 4X-game.

Old World is OK but after playing it for days to the best of my abilities I uninstalled it. It's not fun. It's easy and yet the AI literally cheats by having an unfair ability to produce units faster than us no matter what. Also whenever my leader got 8+ in War or Science the leader would be killed off by so-called RNG EVERY TIME soon after- even if they are in their mid 30s. In other words- playing this slop doesn't make me feel smart, isn't fun, and is playing with a cheater because it lacks balance. So in short: its a waste of time. Amazing that in 2022 games like Chess and Starcraft 1 are still more balanced strategy games than 95% of whats available to play

The game is truly amazing, I wish they'd extend the timeline.
I wish they'd make New World 2 - same premise but SciFi with planets and mechs. That'd be more than perfect.

Old World is insanely good. Like Potato and others have said, it takes a bit to “get into” but once you get a feel for “best practices” and the like, everything clicks so fantastically well that you’ll be addicted. Beating “The Great” difficulty is easily one of my proudest gaming moments.

Every decision matters (or can matter, if you let it) in some form or fashion. It’s just the ultimate blend of 4X and CKIII-like dynasty management

love love love this game. i play by turning off all of the other leaders and tribes so its just me building great cities on the map. even w ithout combat theres plenty to keep you engaged and having fun

Give us the list of good 4x games!

I hope they add new civs later such as Indians or gallic and germanic tribes. Maybe the tribes have a different playstyle like in Imperator rome.

this game is amazing better than civ in many ways. only thing it has/had performance issues later in the game. i need to get another run to see what ha become of it!
