I don't understand why people try to avoide Fusion so much, it's been around for longer than AE and has been used in thousands of movies and it's a rock solid compositing tool that used to cost 1000s before BM bought it. As someone who've used AE for over 5 years, after I lerned nodes, there was no coming back, it makes sense as well as why all pro vfx software are node based as well. Once you go nodes, there's no coming back, I don't even use photoshop anymore as nodes makes a alot more logical sense when I'm doing something complex and not to mention, it's all procedural and I can see from birds eye view everything I've done and make necessary changes without digging deep into a million precomps and order of operatios are static in AE where in Fusion I can decide it. If you are confused about nodes vs layer, I'd recommend In Light VFX's video about Nodes vs Layers.

Glad you didn’t use fusion or is we like to call it… ConFusion! The program is really terrible… Not that it’s not powerful and it can do a lot, but it’s not intuitive at all. You have to know how to do something you can’t possibly figure it out. Unlike after effects, which is so intuitive. They really need to fix fusion and make it More rational.
