Episode 30 - "Ready To Paint"
Building a Real-life HALO Warthog from a Military HUMVEE

In this episode, I am prepping the body for paint. Tomorrow, the painting process will start!

BACK STORY
It is always my dream to build a custom automobile from scratch. I like to be able to design and build the vehicle the way I want it. I have done many vehicles restoration in the past, which I gained lots of knowledge and experience on engine, transmission, suspension, and electrical system. What really intrigued me to build this vehicle was the flexibility to freelance and brainstorm ideas as I go along. When the idea of this vehicle came up, my son was about 10 years old. Like any dad that is mechanically inclined, I wanted to do a father and son project. I asked my son of what he likes to build. He came back with the idea of building a real-life HALO Warthog. Looking over the warthog design, I was fascinated by the aggressive off-road look and the charisma. However, I told my son that we are not going to build a copy of a Warthog. There is no creativity in that. We are going to build our own version of the Warthog. It will have similar stance and aggressive look, but it will have our personalized features in it. This how the project was started. At the time, I already purchased the Humvee from GovPlanet and wasn’t sure what to do with it. Got it because the price was right. The Military was practically giving these away… So we decide to take the body off, save the frame and drivetrain. This way we don’t have to build the vehicle from scratch. We started with the Humvee frame and build it up from there. We then took all the necessary dimensions and start putting it in 3D modeling software (SolidWorks). The entire vehicle was designed in SolidWorks. We then start to build the body on top of the chassis one piece a time. Once the body was somewhat put together, we separated from the chassis so we can finish the body away from the chassis. Will bolt it back on when the body is finished. The body is formed by 2x2 tube steel, 14-gauge body panel, 18-gauge in some non-critical area. This truck is pretty much bullet prove. The Solid Model gives us the weight of approximately 2000 lbs on the body, which is not bad for a rock-solid body. The HUMVEE is built to take a lot more than this weight, so we will be fine. But just to be sure, we upgraded the 6.2L Diesel with a turbo. This vehicle is not designed to be a racing vehicle. It’s an off-road Monster that will craw over just about anything. On the street, it will look like something came out of MAD MAX. The vehicle width will be 8-1/2 feet (102 inches). It is the widest legal vehicle with on the road. This no doubt will be a head turner. It will have 40” wheels and around 10 inches taller than the stock HUMVEE. This is not counting the turret that will be at the top to mount either a automatic paint ball gun or a potato gun. This feature will be the last piece that we build. This is a fascinating project, and I am very excided to see that it is progressing very nicely. The body is targeted to complete by early Spring of 2025. Hope to have the vehicle hit the roads by the end of 2025. Please follow this video series as it will get better and more exiting each week.

The hardest thing to do for this project is to come up with a name for this beast. I am looking for suggestions. Please leave me a comment on what the name should be. Here are some of our ideas so far: HUMVEE Recon, HUMVEE ALPHA, Goliath, Canine (K9), The Beast, BEAST MODE, Velociraptor
