I remember the start of the Mangrel Mob. It was about 1969. Their leader and about 9 moved to Wellington. The Police in Wellington arranged a meeting with them at Porirua East and the Maori Committee in 1972 I think. Their leader had School Cert. and UE. In Wellington he and his Deputy had jobs and looked the others. What we didn't know was that a chapter had already started in Porirua and they turned ip to that meeting in 1972. I left there after that meeting and moved to Hamilton. Years later I met the leader in Wellington dressed in a suit and holding down an executive job in business. Even years later still on TV he was demolishing Wellington high rises on a bulldozer lifted up to the top floor and he was knocking it down floor by floor. His bull dozer fell thru the last three floors I think but he was not hurt. The year they started in Hastings the economy went sour and there were fewer holiday jobs in horticulture and orchards in Hawkes Bay secondary students.

I'm no expert on gangs although I had a bit to do in Hamilton with the Mob. In my experience the impact of urbanization after WW2 was the start of gangs. In the 1950s I met a Hells Angel's at Westfield Freezing Works. He said he was the only Maori in his chapter. The incarceration of young Maori in prisons increased along with urbanization. In country communities we never saw a policeman. Those who say Get a Job, we all had jobs in the 1959s and 60s until the economy turned sour. That's another reason, economic. And therefore the start of the meth pandemic. Gangs aren't to blame for everything but they are a popular target every election for unscrupulous politicians.

If Maori cannot comply with European laws or Government - how can they accept benefits?

some of theguys driving the buss and working for correction are worse than the criminals themselves one obviously setting the younger parollees up for further incarseration im no criminal but I do recognise BS when I hear it its not good and the prison guard stealing inmates money he got caught but I see a pattern of organised crime associates spinning yarns on the outside working for communaty corrections they sure dont like being called out on their BS when there aint nothing they can do about if this I know for sure needs to be fixed this is in Adelaide Australia im talking about a soft white underbelly LOL

Good grief! Why isn't there a system in New Zealand dedicated to cultivating young Maori in professional sports? They have the most amazing physiques!

New Zealand, according to financial expert’s and social analysts, is a borderline third world nation. Ultimately, that leaves the rich & powerful and the working poor with middle class New Zealanders in a sharp decline.

Oh my gosh!! That poor little boy predicting he will end up in jail, committing crimes and had already burned down a house. It is heart crushing to hear such a young boy speak like that about his own future.

I had no idea this existed in NZ at all. I honestly believed a very high percentage of NZ citizens enjoyed a very high level socioeconomic standard of living. With free, high quality health care, free education including higher levels of education, excellent social programs, public assistance, low gun violence, relatively safe cities, I am shocked there is any significant break-down in society. I sincerely hope this segment of population can turn it around.

This is the first time I've ever heard a Maori take personal responsibility, and it's the actual person, in the actual situation, that's saying it, not an intellectual bi-stander. When people speak for themselves, there is the truth. Haurua Jerry, I have so much respect for you and the matter of 'fact' way you spoke. Henare OKeeffe said there are children raising children. What I see daily, is the children that attend primary school the least (my experience) are Maori children. I feel so helpless, they are beautiful children, and the parents are just not interested in their education and future well being it seems. I was always encouraging this lovely wee girl, that one day she could be a vet, or a pshycologist (great with reading emotion). One day I saw her kuia, and I mentioned this. Her reply was "That one is too big for her boots, I always have to put her in her place". Shocked, yes I was incredibly shocked and deeply saddened. Tainui and Te Rarawa.
