The Kulaks where originally German immigrants who moved to Ukraine in the early to mid 19th century.
They brought new farming techniques that greatly increased yield and were granted land by the Tsar and allowed a certain amount of cultural autonomy on condition they shared their agricultural knowledge with the local farmers.
They naturally became a sort of rural aristocracy, being farmers with a great deal of wealth and local status.
The Bolsheviks despised them and the Holodomor was a genocide intended to break the Kulaks grip on the means of agricultural production.
After removing the Kulak farmers from their land the Communist Collectives proved to be incompetent in land management and the farms which had produced excess enough I generate considerable wealth withered and the Soviet Union starved.
As Yuri Besmenov said: "If the Arabs ever adopted Communism they would have a shortage of sand."

The author probably doesn't realise yet how he embarassed himself by reading poorly concocted propaganda. "No hunger outside Ukraine"? Did he even try to do basic fact-checks?

Famine of 1921, then utterly disastrous failed collectivisation, that lowered farmers productivity, then famine of 1932, 10 million farmers moved to cities (meaning there are 10 million farmers less now). So... how did they solve the hunger problem eventually? Released kulaks from gulags? Rolled back collectivisation? How? Or does the hunger persist until this day?

My great grandparents fled Ukraine even before this. Somewhere around the Russian revolution which happened some time before this. I can’t imagine how they would have suffered further during the holodomor. And I still don’t know who, if any family was left behind. I only know they left. But I know there was also family here to meet them.

In fact they almost didn’t make it back to each other. Grandmother had gone through Canada, before getting her naturalization papers in America. Where as Grandfather came straight through here. Family reunited them.

Childhood friends that stayed together.

As I’m half, my heart goes out to Ukraine. Always. 😔

If you ever asked her what she wanted to eat to she wouod say, "anything edible, it doesn't matter, people are so picky....."
And if you called her Ukrainian she would pretend to spit, and say "Bullshit, I am Russ."

Communism itself is a crime against humanity. The fact the people constantly bring up the Nazi's mass killing 6 million jews but never mention the 60.5 million victims of Communism is obsurd. That is an earth shattering amount of death. Communists can quite literally build a mountain from corpses.

Something that bothers me is why we don't learn about this at school, everyone knows what the holocaust was and how terrible fascism was everywhere it happened, yet tragedies like these which also happened in other communist regimes like mao's, pol pot's, are never spoken of, even though we faced an entire cold war because of it

This is why we must be cautious when it comes to our governments. The terrors of the communist experiements in the 20th century has not been taught well in the past few decades. It should be every bit as required as the horrors committed by Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan - and yes, the United States.

The fact that a government could create an environment where people starve, and begin to literally eat each other and bury each other alive to try and manage the conditions...it's astounding.

I first learned of this event when Zelensky mentioned about it while giving a speech to the Canadian parliament yesterday. From the context of what he said, I couldn’t really understand what exactly happened or what it was but after learning about it from this video, I shall never forget. Truly sad what hunger can drive a person to do and even sadder what a system can do to a people. Thank you for all your hard work to all who contribute to this and all the other channels affiliated. It’s such a blessing to live in a time where so much information can be accessed and even presented in an entertaining format (entertaining may not be “best” term for this particular video topic) but I hope this age can finally end hunger worldwide. I pray that the Ukraine conflict ends soon not only for them, but for the thousands or maybe millions of Africans who will face a famine threat due to the disruption of grain shipments that the conflict has caused.

Why don't you ask some Historians that did work after the curtain fell? The idea of "Holodomor" being intentional is based on western conjucture, pre curtain fall. The main Historian on whose conjecture all others that did not work with the archives based their conclusions, has retracted his own prior to his death in the mid 2000s.

This is a modern myth spawned from anti-communist propaganda pre curtainfall. After the curtain fell and once there was access to the archives, it was not even a question that nothing about the unionwide famine was intentional. The mos likely culprit is weather. Simple fucking mother nature. The harsh ideological regimes imposed did play a factor, but weren't the main factor. You mix a bad year with human incometence and a touch of anti regime restance and you have a famine. This though is true of pretty much any famine. There are two blocks, either humans always bear fault for all famines, or the exact opposite, humans never bear fault. This is a somewhat religious question depending on wether you regard all famines ever as the result of human incompetence or you regard all famines ever as the result of unfortunate circumstances.

There is no historical work out there not outdated by new evidence, that supports the claim of an intentional "Holodomor". Add in exaggerations on the scope multiplied by stories told, the whole thing has as much merit as the "Backstabbing Legend" of the Nazis. Regarding the strongest proponents of the myth you ought to raise two eyebrows. Mostly Applebaum and Snyder are cited that did fuckall work on the subject and are at this point popular fiction authors that make their living demonizing Americas perceived enemies.

I think it’s weird and slightly facetious that people only speak of Ukraine when this topic comes up, despite the fact that nearly the entire southern region of the USSR saw the exact same famine, why don’t we mention Kazakhstan? Too brown for us to care? Or is it because Kazakhstan doesn’t call it a genocide and acknowledges that the famine was actually naturally occurring?

This is not history but a propagandistic interpretation. The communists were internationalists, they support dozens of ethnic languages, there were newspapers and radio programs and centres of film production in the nations that made up the Soviet Union. Nationalists think they are special and all others are their inferior enemies. In a backward country where most people make a living on the land - reform is needed. Capitalism reduces farmers to poverty and expels them. The soviets had to reform the land while being boycotted and attacked by the Imperial powers. Imperial powers the nationalist were always willing to serve. The nationalists myths of how they were oppressed leads to the wars of today. What state do they want? An ethnic state of white people with no jews, gypsies or communists ....sound familiar?

I am one of those strings of a generational tree that was cast out. My great great grandparents, decided early after the end of world war 1 and the destruction of their country they decided to flee to america with my granny (great grandma- died in 2018) who at the time was tiny, I believe she was an infant at that time. We still celebrate polish traditions for Easter, it’s like a flat bread with the nativity scene on it and you crack off a piece and dip it in wine or honey and you say (and forgive me I’m American so I’ll butcher this) “diebusha desecanni” and you take the bread dip it in the honey and say “diebusha” and eat it. It’s like a polish Christian blessing I think? I dunno, really oughta research this lol but we do it every year on Easter when we get together. My grandma hosts it and still does it since her mom and grandmother did it with her. My daughter is now 4, it’s 2023, I’ll continue this tradition because I believe our heritage is important. Thanks for this by the way, very informative video.

My Grandparents were Holodomor Survivors. Yes they too were traumatized for life. My Grandmother was the only survivor on her side of the familly. Her first born was a girl and the baby starved to death in her arms. She described trying to extract milk from her breasts for the baby but since she was starving there was no milk for the baby either. She went out after dark to secretly bury the baby rather than have the baby taken away on a cart with the other bodies. Still brings ters to my eyes when think about them.

Since the fullscale invasion, Russia has definitely lost soft power around the world. Only now are our eyes truly open to the evil of Russia & the USSR. My first wake-up call already came at visiting Chernobyl with a guide, and hearing how Moskow did everything they could to cover it up and keep the fall-out out of Russia proper, not giving a damn about the Baltics or Ukraine. And now, around the world, finally the Holodomor is recognized as a genocide.

More fascist propaganda. I suggest you actually read books---the type that debunk lies from the likes of William Randolph Hearst and yellow journalism. Never happened and the entirety of the lies during the time period have been debunked. Fraud, Famine and Fascism is a good place to start. You shouldn't believe everything you don't bother to minimally research yourself on the internet, children.

Great video especially in today's world. I guess this is why the Ukrainians want payback. It started when they restricted the Russian language being used in commerce and from being taught in schools. More jobs specifically went to ethnic Ukrainians as well with the policies enacted in the 2010s. The USA cannot enact policies like this because its racism. Whether its the color of someone's skin or their ethnicity, to enact policies that discriminate on either is RACISM. Ukraine has been practicing racist policies and the USA supports this racism.
