As always, super informative! I have a garage bunny,
( Thank you Ninja) and I wanted to know your thoughts on it? I feel that it is difficult to a bunny hop while attached to it. After watching your video, now I understand that the rear wheel isn't allowed to travel in an arc. Do you think this is a useful tool? Thank you

Now the SECRET is out! This is the only bunny hop explanation you will ever need. I tried all sort of instructions for the last 2 years unsuccessfully and almost given up until I watched this. Thanks Kyle

When I was 40 years old, I could bunny hop my road bike, my track bike and my mountain bike (GT Pantera - rigid). It was second nature from about 10 years old, when my mates and I called it a 'gutter hop', so we didn't buckle the wheels on our Dragstars. About 4 months ago just after I turned 63, my 11 year old son and I were on a mini bike touring/camping/fishing weekend when he asked me if I could show him how to bunny hop. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get the back wheel more than a few inches off the ground. So, I got off the bike, put it on it's centre stand, stepped back and looked at it. It wasn't the 10-12 kilos on the front racks, nor the 35 or so kilos in the rear panniers that was stopping me. It was the tent, fishing gear and the dog in the trailer that was keeping mu back wheel grounded. I unhitched the trailer and problem was solved.

Good luck Kyle, hope you get your health in order so you can enjoy riding bike. Unfortunately I am going to unfollow as my main reason for this channel was learning from you teaching April. Good luck to both of you in your future endeavours personally and professionally. ✌🏼

Your instructional videos are excellent. Have you considered continuing doing just these while you are taking time out of mtb or do you feel the need to have a complete rest / break from biking for now? Wishing you both all the best which ever direction you both decide to go in. Fyi, a girl friend of 14 years & I split up over 20 years ago & although it was tough at the time, today we are great friends as life's turned out great for us both. Life always changes ❤.

Since the comments are turned off on your latest video and I don’t do instagram, I figured I’d leave a comment here.

I’m sad to see this happen. I feel like it’s something that happened to you and not because you would choose it. I’m extremely sad that Kyle is still suffering from a decision he made that was done with the best of loving intentions. Please God bless Kyle and April with healing and a long healthy life!

The transfer or 180 helps to learn the larger hop better. Pull the front wheel up, and then scoot the bike over side ways, I think the tension is in the setup, so you could get the little hop then style by tilt bike to left or right and then tilt back before landing, when your manualling for a while and the front wheel is spinning or stops spinning changes the dynamic and then the hop you were doing for the 30 inch bank head on allows you to hop from further away, but I recommend to find a 30 in wall first, and hop up a little sideways instead of head on you can slowly put wheel up then kick the back wheel. Head on is not safe. Find a line on the road, and transfer from one side to the other side and practice trying to get both wheels to land at the same time, and you will naturally find the the grip and foot placement, front manual is hard, and I think the gripping of the seat with the bar spin and then trying to hop and spin helps get freedom in the bike I guess like the bike is a skateboard and you need to change the balance or movement with your different placements, however might get a weird one foot habit once practice this, and best way to land is with both feet on the pedals. Transfers are fun, but has twisiting movements and then yes bad habits will come with it, however the long front wheel manual (wheelie without pedaling) and hopping with one wheel while moving very fast feels so good, especially when there is a line on the road or the curb, and and you run a straight line right along the edge of the curb, wall, or even just a white line on the road, something about feeling glued to that line feels so awesome.

It's harder to do on an MTB cuz of the size, but one way I teach people on a BMX bike is do have their feet planted straddle the bike. Then do the lift and "forward row" and learn how to get the back wheel off the ground without even using the pedals, all handlebar action.

Ответить
@framingboon4934
@framingboon4934 - 18.01.2024 21:05

I can't seem to achieve the forward row movement in my bunny hops (hence the saddle always hits my butt and I can never get the rear wheel as high as the front regardless how hard I try)

Is there a requirement whether the master foot should be at the front or the rear? Does it affect?

I had no ideea i can bunny hop much higher until i made a video of myself and noticed how high my front wheel went. So i realised i need to pull my back wheel same, just flex my legs. I hop over a bar that i thought initially was too high for me. Filming yourself help to see where u can improve. I love that u say to be creative not get stuck on advices like is the ultimate truth. There is much more to be discovered.

What if I have a heavy 24ah battery over the rear wheel?

Ответить
@pulsedp
@pulsedp - 18.01.2024 04:29

I’m a heavier lad at just over 100kg/220lbs and I can get the bike off the ground but am definitely guilty of the muscleman technique so this helps. I feel like that tension on the pedals needs to be there so I can engage with the pins and bring the rear wheel up. And I’m on a hard tail so I don’t have the assistance of the rear rebound. Absolutely shredded my shin practicing this a few weeks ago.

You went into manual position (lifting the front) before you jump. Can't be just simply jump from the mid position isn't it? This is the trick that's difficult to learn. No tubers teaches this technique!

Any chance you could elaborate on how to use the bunny hop technique over "the pop" method. For example, when you need to create more height to get to the other side of a jump. And how to do that bunny, differences on do it on flat ground, etc...
Thank you very much in advance :)

Scooping is a vital skill to control the bike. The debate if it's needed is purely technical and has no practical purpose. That semantical argument has done nothing but harm. There is no reason to not learn a vital bike control skill.

Yes you need to learn to lift your rear wheel by scooping.

Thanks Kyle, good analysis. As a Garage Bunny devotee I had 'pedal separation anxiety' when I swapped out the clips for flats. My solution was two-fold 1) make a pair of shin-friendly pedals by removing the pins and wrapping some thin foam around them and 2) created an exercise with the front wheel propped up about 12" (similar to your set-up) and then bouncing up and down as if on a pogo stick, replicating just the 'pop' part of the hop. The feeling of the pressure under the grips was what I focused on (arms fairly straight) - I found doing this created confidence and a muscle memory such that I didn't really think about my feet after that. As you say 90% of the work lifting the bike is done in the hands - maybe more??? 😊

Beautiful explanation. I think one of the more difficult things about teaching or explaining a technique is that people may interpret things differently. Breaking the techniques down helps you get started, but it's ultimately a continuous movement. Like you said, you need to practice! That's when those a ha! moments will happen.
