Though I do appreciate that they're going after Carfax, they did, still, rely on one of their competitors to get the pertinent information. And, going after the sales rep is unfair. He is providing the Carfax up front. Not his fault they're a disingenuous record keeper. And now, people won't trust him, personally.

When a dealership does a diagnosis on your car and gives you an estimate, do other dealerships have access to this data if you never do the work? For example, if my car was found to have water in the transmission, if I opt to not fix it at this one dealership (cancelling the work order), will another dealership typically see that diagnosis and estimate? Also, will that diagnosis end up in CarFax if the work was never even done?

Why is Muir blaming car salesman Rico for Carfax's omission? What exactly is Muir accusing Rico of doing wrong? Not the salesman's fault Carfax is wrong. Is Muir accusing Rico of knowingly misrepresenting the car's condition?

That man didn't really defend his company too well. Carfax isn't bad, dealerships ARE what's bad. Dealership alter Carfax reports, customers salaries, and patch up used cars so that they'll work for 3 months and then break down. Carfax receives their reports from the same place all the other competitors do, usually from the state. Insurance companies must report to state authorities. Now what is different from company to company is how detailed the reports are but it seems like most all do the same thing since it's from the same sources. What you want to get out of a history report is three things. How many owners, how much mileage, and in what kind of accidents it's been in.

I ran several of my cars and former cars through CarFax.   It's set up for car dealers, I guess, because they ALWAYS showed the car as being a one-owner car even if the car had several owners (including myself).  One had been wrecked ... I filled out the accident report myself.... and it didn't show up on the CarFax report.  It's sheeyit.

Why would you go ask the salesperson you fuking idiot REPORTER. You are a idiot and should not be working for any news channel. All of a sudden carfax is bad because you searched for that one problem car that was not right out of thousands of cars out there????boy trump was right on the money about you clowns. Also you are terrible and not believable at all. You sound like a used car salesman the way they used to talk and the vibe they put out around 30 years ago....disgusting worm....

No joke, my car was involved in a horrible wreck where the car was not drivable. And after getting "fixed" ($25,000 estimate by the certified BMW adjuster) I noticed there wasn't any indication of an accident on the CARFAX. The car was crushed on the right side. If you're buying a used make sure you have a professional do a thorough inspection done.

I bought a 2017 Dodge Durango from the Russell Westbrook (yes the basketball player) Dodge dealership in Van nuys California. The Carfax also showed no accidents but the driver's side door has a different shade of black from the rest of the car. also the bumper is a little off. Now i'm stuck with this piece of shit that little by little is falling apart.

Just bought a Volkswagen CC R-line on 3/23/18 , 336 miles and 7 days later, I have gas leaking from the car completely all over the road, only to be stranded with an out of pocket for towing fee, despite having towing coverage it being on my warranty covered on my VALUE PLUS. Mind you that warranty program in question C.A.R.S Protection Plus Inc , has a A+ B.B.B. rating yet they have 3 postive reviews and 58 negative ones.

Upon doing some research there's a recall on 281,000 Volkswagens with possible
"17V509000" from 08/16/2017 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP). THe car was carfax'ed. When it comes to history it should included recalls to assist independent dealers to fix. Currently investigating the matter with VW.

Carfax is in bed with the dealers who buy their products. They won't help you find out when there is an issue with a report..they are beholding to the dealers too much and not for the average customer. Don't ever trust a car fax period.

CarFake is the biggest scam. First off, when people get in accidents by themselves and don't want insurance price hikes, they go to certain back yard budy shops that DO NOT create any paper work or report these repairs.

I sold cars before and The CARFAX had been altered by the dealer. I have seen it done before. What you have to do is spend the money and run your own CARFAX and if you are not satisfied with mileage ect. DO NOT BUY.

Carfax has F***ked me. I bought a car 600 miles showing clean and now 80,000 miles later try to trade it in or sell it and it comes up rebuilt or restord title and I paid full fair value for this dam car! It runs great and has had no problems or issues. I have been told that they will call a stolen car rebuilt or restored even if the car is retrieved and nothing found wrong? Anyay it is pissing me off. How bout some details at least because it is costing me 8 or 10 grand. At least I deserve some details!

Carfax is not as good as Autocheck but no report will give you all of the facts. Having investigated both companies well beyond what the reporter did here, let me just say this. Autocheck is a much better company. If there is an error with a report and you can prove it, they will make the changes over the phone with you after you provide support documents to substantiate your facts. I recently did this. Carfax on the other hand was very difficult to deal with and took 10 days to make the changes I requested. I lost the buyer for my car because they were not willing to wait around for the updated Carfax information. Next, neither service reports accidents unless there was a police report. If you had an accident, reported it to your insurance company and had the car repaired, the accident will not be posted in Carfax or Autocheck. They only list accidents where a police report was filed. Both companies provide reports that are directional tools but are used mainly by retail sellers to sell their cars and to poke holes in the cars that you are trying to sell to them. With all of this said, I still do support both companies. Why? Because whether you are buying or selling a car, you need to know what everyone else in the marketplace is seeing about your car or any car for that matter. Knowledge is power and if you possess more than the competition you stand a better chance of selling for more money or buying for less money.

it sure sucks... but someone would have to be too naive to think that Carfax will actually put on its ads "Our reports do not include all the information of past accidents"...  Same thing with other products. Example: Santa Claus drinking a Coca Cola in front of the fireplace "Acids in this drink will corrode your bones"

The commercials changed to say "no one knows everything." Not sure why Carfax became the devil incarnate, but it not knowing everything is akin to McDonald's having to say its coffee is hot. It's ONE resource to use. If you use it and its competitors and are willing to spend $100 before you spend $15,000, so be it. The question is are we worse off with the service/info it provides or better, or does it protect the consumer more than it potentially hurts it?
