Kiss Me It's For Science by The Offtopics at POME Mar 2021

The Offtopics playing “Kiss Me, It’s For Science” at POME (aka the “Palace of Magnificent Experiences”) on Saturday 27 March 2021.

Attempts have been made to clean up the sound. This was the first song of the first set and the first time the band had worked with the in-house engineer who was quickly learning that the Love Wombat is also a LOUD Wombat.

This was the first time the band had played since December 2020 and, incredibly, the first time in front of a live audience in the same room as them since February 2020. This version of band features Linc Yow Yeh on drums, Tim Webb on bass, Stu Earl on saxophone, Huw Gregory on Keys and Polash Larsen on guitar and lead vocals. It was the band’s first show at POME and, in another first, Polash’s first gig as anything other than a temporary guitarist in a band since 2012.

With all the “firsts” at play, the band were somewhat subdued. Melbourne would emerge and submerge in and out of lockdowns repeatedly over the coming months. At this time venues were required to enforce a number of Covid safety measures including ensuring that the audience wear masks, remain seated and enforcing a cap on capacity. This had the effect of making the venue somehow seem cramped and empty at the same time. This presents a challenge to reach a critical mass of “fun” for any performer. Despite this, the band were grateful for the opportunity and at the extent to which the venue endeavored to treat the artists well.

POME would go on to book The Offtopics seven more times throughout the year with four of those shows being cancelled due to snap Covid lockdowns. The band would continue to play there until July 2022 when financial pressures forced the venue to change its business model.
