Other people try to help us when we get embarrassed.

This has not been my experience. When I get nervous, most of the time people start making fun of me. My parents did this, my friends did this, and even my coworkers do this. What planet are you living on?

I love being awkward. It keeps people away, but attracts the people who understand, and sympathize. Its just a matter of finding the right people.
