The new wrx is fat and heavy, and a slave to the EPA regulations on the stock tune.

But $2500 now gives you an extra +150whp/tq. And you don't have to open it till 600. So that's something.

Bitter sweet victory to watch as an owner of a previous gen GT86 which would have been spaned by both of the cars featured here.

When the new BRZ/86 came out, reviewers were comparing it to the S2000. That’s when I started to suspect it was serious.

The guy driving the wrx in the first round had a horrendous launch and shifting oml. Reminds me of me and my friends who just started learning manual dogging their dads sports cars in highschool

well. Now that I bought a 2023 WRX a week ago after owning a 2016, I can confirm that the stock 2023 is much faster. As far as this video, doing absolutely no modifications to either, but adding an access port and getting the most out of their stock configurations, the WRX would cook the BRZ. There is a lot of meat left on the bone in a stock configuration. The BRZ will always be a superior platform for track, but the WRX stock configuration does offer enough unlockable power to change these results I believe. Spend an extra 500 and get an intake for both and the difference will get larger. You are going to have to spend 8k on a BRZ to make it out compete a base WRX with 1k in mods. add any kind of imperfect road conditions and the WRX will continue to gap the BRZ. With an intake and tune you can hit 320awhp and 350awtq.

Now put a turbo on the BRZ and make it as fast as it looks. WRX is so 90s lol Looks ugly compared to the older models.

Seems like the right outcome. WRX is for straight line performance and off-road, while the brz is a road course vehicle.

Makes sense to me. 600lbs less, RWD and lower to the ground. The BRZ is designed for this. The difference is I want 4 doors, so the WRX still wins in my book!

First WRX driver has terrible shifting and isn't getting close to redline to make the most of the powerband... Be better man

This was a wholly pathetic showing by the wrx. That car used to be the elite cheap ride. Now it can't even beat it's baby brother.

I'm a wrx fan but the fact the the new ones 1/4 mile time is the same as my 21 year old one is (was) is pretty disappointing

I wonder how the new turbos are. Old ones would fall off at top end pretty bad. you can lose a good 25hp at redline

This is precisely why Subaru’s fear won’t give the brz a turbo trim. It would obliterate wrx sales and make the platform obsolete.

In my opinion, Subaru could’ve done much better with the WRX.. I was expecting at least the WR Rex to get off the line faster due to the fact it’s all wheel drive, but obviously, that’s not the case here it’s way too heavy and under powered.

They did a great job with the brz it’s a well put together little sports car
