I’m a healthy 40-year-old randomly experiencing symptoms like a double heartbeat and brief breathlessness (1 second), smart watch showing Afib .
I believe it’s linked to receiving 4 Covid vaccine doses (3 Pfizer, 1 Moderna booster).
My cardiologist is investigating with a 5-day ECG test and prescribed Flecainide pills.
Afib occurs randomly, 1-2 times weekly. Heart issues can arise from Covid itself and vaccine reactions.

Thank you for such a thorough and informative video, I wanted to ask whether a health and fitness lifestyle has any impact in reducing the knock on impacts of being in permanent AF (so effectively on the CURE side of your equation) ?. I have had a mild stroke episode and have started on Apixaban to prevent clots. I haven't drunk alcohol in over 20 years and don't smoke and weight train extensively. I am though concerned about aerobic training as if i wear a smart watch whilst walking briskly my heartrate varies a lot.

So interesting when you listen to someone who REALLY knows their subject! I've come down this route as I have had palpitations and my watch has also measured Afib once or twice ... but not again. I just wanted to understand what the common thoughts were regarding this subject. I was lucky enough to stumble across this.

Thanks to Dr Marcus for discussing this and making it so easy to understand!

Dear Doctor, many thanks for this amazing vlog! I just had my second Afib surgery and not recovering very well. More places ablated than first time 13 yrs ago. I see my surgeon Monday, nearly three weeks later????? Hoping for answers and started PT. It is discouraging to feel WORSE than before you went in.
Anyway as a non clinician this actually was in English even I could understand with only a teachers mind. So many many thanks. I will listen to it again! That is how informative this has been. I’m so very impressed as I’ve listened to other talks, and my eyes crossed from confusion.
You are the best! Thank you for sharing your experience just wonderful!!!

Terrific explanation. We needed this kind of conversation when my mom went into the hospital with pleural effusions. We had a cardio consult while she was there and he said she now had baseline afib. But she never felt the afib. The reason we were at the hospital was because of the effusions. No one mentioned a nexus. The effusions became more frequent and it was two years before her pulmonologist suggested that the pleural effusions were likely caused by the afib. She would have tried the ablation or the drugs even the cardioversion if it would have stopped the effusions, too.

Terrific information. My interest in afib is due to my fibrillation, often misdiagnosed as afib. I have an irregular rhythm- not chaotic- but really weird! Is this worrisome, in your opinion?

Very informative. I have had Paramoxl Afib since I was 21 (59 now) and have just switched from Sotalol and Flecainide. I am hopeful this will reduce the number of episodes I have and am in the process of getting an ablation. I knew a fair bit about the condition, but you broadened my knowledge and explained the various options much better than I had known before. Thank you.

so I was diagnosed a couple years ago when I came back from China in 2019 that I had a fib and also I had a flutter and also a slow heart rate we took care of the heart rate with the pacemaker. We took care of the flutter with an ablation. I assume go in for a ablation for the AP. My question to you is would it be worthwhile for me to own an Apple Watch or something like that? That could possibly detect a fib in the future I'm really confused about it. Thanks for any response.

So, the watches do not pick up PVCs? I need to monitor heart rate as I had many PVCs on my EKG and I am considering a watch or other device, however I think I am hearing that it will not pick up PVCs.

Everyone here talking about a-fib….. a-fib is non-life threatening in the immediate time frame and will self correct. I had a v-fib heart attack and died within 15 minutes with 100% blockage of the left anterior descending artery on the heart…. The widowmaker.
There’s a huge difference between a-fib and v-fib.
If the cardiologist wasn’t already in the ER when I arrived I would not be here now. He brought me back.

Great presentation and information. Due to needing a knee replacement procedure I stopped running 5 - 6 years ago, and within a couple of months I was suddenly diagnosed with A-Fib at age 74. I had been running from age 13, an had done many road races, and long distance runs...even competed in 1964 Olympic trials.

I have been on 5 mg (2X/day) of Apixaban and 25 mg (2X/day) of Metoprolol. Have changed eating habits and holding at under 190 weight, 6 feet tall. Had a heat stroke 18 months ago due to officiating five high school ball games on a 114 degree day in Arizona. Don't perform these stupid mistakes any more.

Just sent my smart watch back today before listening. I have a shadow beat and the watch was giving me a very low bpm and high. My heart Dr said its accuracy couldn’t be relied on as true. Now i am taking pulse regularly myself to get true beats. Not convenient but the other was causing anxiety and wonder. Thank you for support. I have heart failure and a low ejection fraction, hoping to improve with drugs and slow exercise but this was all very interesting. Thanks for coffee bit!

Should you take a blood thinner if you went to the emergency room with atrial fibrillation with RVR and was shocked back to rhythm with electrical cardio version BUT scored 0 on the CHA2DSVASc score. Please reply as I am not sure if I should take blood thinners yet because of all the side effects and the fact that if you stop them then your risk goes way up for a clot. Please reply soon!

Great presentation. One issue of concern to me (as an experienced AFib patient) is: Except for alcohol and coffee, what are other possible triggers for AFib? My experience is that foods/snacks containing liquorice may play a role in these episodes. Is there any research on other foods that might play a role in AFib episodes?
The presentation does not address other conditions that might cause AFib. For example, would a high calcium score be a contributory factor?

good quality pulse oximeters actually have 2 LED's, a red one and an infra-red one and the difference between the is used because this is more stable a measurement than absorption at one wavelength. Note also that the better ones have the LED(s) on one side (say the top) and the light detectors on the opposite side. The simpler one sided designs are sensitive to the amount of pressure on the finger giving inconsistent readings.

Diagnosed 11 yrs ago, I asked my cardio doc, what about ablation? He said no. I don’t know why. Fatigue is a biggy. But I never can tell if in or out. I am tired of taking all these drugs, I’m 67 and I am in chronic a fib. So far I’ve lost 100 lbs so far, I’ve quit drinking. So far my a fib is still present. Didn’t like metropolol so I am on verapamil, digoxin, xarelto, and an anti acid script as a preventative for the blood thinner, oh yes can’t forget iron, for some reason I am anemic. I am so tired of it all. The drugs are what gets me Xarelto $500 - 600, then down to $85, with insurance and the card. The digoxin, has been around as digitalis since the 1790s, look it up. That costs about $45 with insurance etc., over 200 years old. and quite frankly, I’m just tired of making the pharmaceutical companies rich, because so long as we have the pharmaceutical companies making a lot of money we won’t have any cures for disease.

Dealing with periodic afib for 7 years now triggers are alcohol caffeine salt especially salt
The meds they tried gave me Barrett’s so not using any meds for Rhythm control just a blood thinner

I m 71 years old good shape exercise and no alcohol caffeine in any form and reduce salt

I know everyone is different but the two things that reduce the frequency and duration is magnesium and Taurine supplements.
