The British Royal Family isn't actually useless. It does serve a function, but I do recognize that some wish to give them their freedom from carrying out state functions. As for defending the faith, that's a pro-forma title -- essentially meaningless. And the Royal Family is not responsible for the decline of the Church of England. Christianity in general has been declining in Europe for many decades.
Also keep in mind that the monarch doesn't hold any actual power, other than moral power. They have much responsibility, but little power.
