Can You Beat Fallout: New Vegas With Only The Flare Gun?

I've got one correction to one thing you said, followed by one thing that makes this challenge even worse than most people realize.
Correction: The "Optimized" ammo is a 3:2 conversion, not 3:1. You make 2 Optimized per 3 normal converted, just like with the Overcharged ammo. There are a few advantages to Optimized over Overcharged, but the ones relevant outside of Hardcore mode are the further increased damage multiplier (x1.3 vs x1.25) and lower condition damage multiplier (x1.1 vs x1.5). In Hardcore, Optimized also has only 60% of the weight of a standard unit of ammo.
What makes this run worse: The other upside of Vigilant Recycler is that it doubles the chance of recovering a "Drained" unit of Energy Weapon ammo upon firing your weapon. This includes Flamer Fuel, which goes from a 25% chance of recovery to a 50% chance. However, there's two little caveats: the recovery chance is per shot fired, not per unit of ammo expended, and no matter how much you expend per shot, you can only get one drained unit back. This means that with the Flare Gun you'll need to expend, on average, 60 units of Flamer Fuel to get back enough Drained Flamer Fuel Tanks to craft 1 unit of Flamer Fuel, or 180 units to craft 2 units of Optimized.

I actually tried this run, against Nerbit’s advice. After watching the video and doing a little research, I thought “Oh, it can’t be THAT bad”.

I was somewhat wrong.

I focused on criticals and any perks that would increase my damage to Lanius (Including Confirmed Bachelor, and Fight the Power.

For Lanius, I started the fight like Nerbit, but ran backwards through the training area and off the small cliff in a circle, while V.A.T.S. firing at his head. Slasher and psycho were my friends, as well as auto stimpaks and doctors bags.

It was a looonong fight, I had to repeat a few times to finally win.

Ammo was the biggest issue, especially with some vendors refusing to ever restock at all. I found the most efficient strategy was to wait 3 days with ED-E, getting fuel each day, go to Cliff Brisco, Johnston Nash, Chett, and the traveling trader at the NCR outpost, while supplementing my ammo with Homemade fuel for smaller encounters. My least favorite part of the run.

I feel accomplished, but also would not recommend.

There was, at least at some point, a bug where by entering vats with incendiary ammo equipped in the anti material rifle, and i presume other weapons with incendiary, you could set NPCs on fire and kill them with environmental kills. Could call the challenge "beating new vegas with heat vision."

With the whole thing of shots sometimes phasing through NPCs. To me, it seems like every NPC (played included) is comprised of multiple hitboxes for the locational damage system that the game has. These boxes move as the NPC moves and looks around. This was unintended side effect where it's possible for projectiles to pass through the seams between these hitboxes depending on what animation the NPC is doing and what way they are oriented in relation to the player. I've had a time where a Super Mutant, for some reason, looked straight up and I had my shot pass through their neck and do nothing but alert the Super Mutant to my presence.

It sounds like you are saying “Flavor Fuel” and not flanker fuel LOL

You know this is actually pretty similar to doing a challenge run using only the Zhu-Rong pistol in Fallout 3. Both have garbage base damage and have to rely on burn damage to be economical.

Except I'd rather use the Zhu-Rong any day. 10mm is way more common.

Flare blitz is a physical high damaging move. I think ember would of been a more suitable name or maybe fire spin.

There's another use for the Flare Gun. It's a necessary weapon if you wanna play as Caleb from Blood.

I wanted to see the Flare Gun used in Old World Blues. Those free implants could have helped in the Main Game.

Just wondering but have you ever done the skilled glitch? You pick the perk at the start of the game, then go far enough out to get the prompt to make any changes, reselect the perk and get an extra +5 to everything with only a -10% to skill gains. After getting far enough in old world blues you can do it a third time with the sinks auto doc or drop the perk to keep the total +10 and lose the -10% gains

If you go to the Fiend’s stolen vault on the western side of NV, you can find quite a lot of flamer fuel on the fiends in the living quarters. At least, in the PC version.

I'd think Quartermaster Barden would a good source of flamer fuel, given how much he carries at any given time.

In my first playthrough, I never used flamers and didn't use hardcore mode.
This meant that I had a little bit over 5 thousand rounds when I found the flare gun. And so I used it. All of it.

It was not enough.
Can you beat Lonesome Road with only the flare gun, though? Considering I never bought flamer ammo until getting the flare gun...Yes, actually. But you would need close to 7,000 units of flamer ammo to reach Ulysses.
