As a Steam Deck owner, Linux user, and PC gamer: please never do exclusives.
I don't care about how it could help drive adoption, as gamers we should always strive to include as many people as possible and put up as little barriers to entry as need be. i.e.: own a PC and have internet

Steam Deck is also the only device that consumers can buy that actively fights against Microsoft's monopoly within the desktop space.
Also, Epic could get their launcher on Deck but they don't.

I love my samsung s23 ultra for emulating it can run most games really well it works with any Bluetooth controller plus i have a razer kishi and it come with a stylus so it also works great for ds and 3ds games plus with samsung dex you can plug your phone into a monitor and use it like a computer so i can also play my games on the big screen if i want to

12 months later.. it didnt kill the switch 😂. But I think it should or may in the long run. Nintendo first party games are at points really fun, but the price tag seems too high for games that feel like they could run on a playstation 2. With only a handful of good exclusive games and becoming even more lackluster over the past 2 years, everyone is screaming for an upgrade, but this would only serve the 3rd party games that are already on ps xbox or pc. An upgrade will barely be needed to play breath off the wild. Which is a good game but is not exactly a demanding game. Mario and pokemon are hardly pushing the boundaries of needing anything more powerful. So begs the question, with so little games on switch, 99% of which can be played on a console much better than the switch and now portable with the steam deck. why would you pick up a switch. PC games are far cheaper also (bar xbox game pass)

No, you gotta have know how to make that work. Switch you just put in the games and it works. Steam deck is just crap compared to the actual switch.

I personally like my steamdeck more than my switch at the moment, but I would not in anyway call it a switch killer.

You guys are adorable. My favorite podcasts are just a couple of friends hanging out and genuinely just enjoying each other's company. Another great example of that is the Friendship Onion.

They should have presave configs in button mapping section like drop-down menu to select the system you're emulating. Then if is not to you liking you can edit the layouts and save them for each console emulation profile. Additionally you should be able to set a default dock and handheld mode profile that would not change unless in the specific system emulator.

Nobody seems to care, that the steamdeck has battery power for about an hour gaming (if you get that much...)... it is not a portable console if you need to stick right next to a power outlet... well, whatever floats your boat.

Coming back to this after just getting a Steam Deck is interesting. I do wish Nintendo had better account systems, but not for the reasons Bob said. Some people can only afford one console and their Switch may be their only one, so being able to share games more easily would be great. I still think the whole switching from TV to handheld thing works because of that. One of the other things that Nintendo does well (which is quickly disappearing with the whole deck verified thing), is having games just work out of the box. PCs were always a pain for me due to that, I just wanted to sit down and play. However, now more and more developers are working with the Steam Deck specifically in mind, I think that won’t be much of an issue with the deck for long.

Loved this podcast! But I think you guys are seriously discounting the power of emulation. I have a Switch, am getting a Deck, and it’s really tempting to emulate Switch titles on the deck…people have already emulated BotW. The Deck community is really supportive and have a ton of content showing complete noobs like myself how to emulate on the Deck. I think that’s a huge part of this people aren’t considering.

If you only have the money for one handheld console, even if the Deck is more expensive, you get every PC Game, every old school game from Gamecube/PS2/N64/XBox360/PS3/etc. AND you could emulate major Switch titles.

It’s a more powerful console.
It has a larger game library.
And it can do everything the Switch does, including Zelda…

To me, it definitely was. Sold my Switch as soon as I got one.

While I do think that there will be more competition for the steam deck in its form factor, you will be hard pressed to find another company with as deep pockets who are willing to sell their consoles at a loss.

Steam deck is only for people with high end PC's? Huh? I bought a steam deck bcs i CAN'T play my PC games on my computer bcs it's old and suck and i can't afford a new PC that can play modern games. I literally sold my CS GO skins to buy the 512GB Steam Deck.

The one gaming Handheld Windows PC that I would be interested in would be Ayn Loki Max because it is the most reasonably priced handheld with higher end specs than the Steam Deck for $125 bucks more than the 512gb version of the Deck @$775 bucks.

I would actually say android handheld video game systems will be the destroyer of the Nintendo switch in general. Closest rival currently is the odin lite but even then, it’s still slightly too expensive at 230 dollars. Give it another 3-5 years and Nintendo will need to step up it’s competitive edge or else it’ll get surpassed. Maybe not popularity wise but literally in every other way it’ll be behind on.

The reason why anyone would be sceptical towards the Steam Deck is the fear of the unknown. Why? You may ask. Because ultimately, it is the most personal console/PC handheld device that can do a bit of everything that anyone would want. Unless you absolutely copy the setup of someone else, your experience will never be the same as the other steam deck guy. That said, valve even thought of that so you can play any game at any setting you desire as well as copy other people's profile to get the best visuals or best FPS. Again, wherever your imagination takes you. The possibilities are endless and the only limitation is the user and his will to explore how deep the rabbit hole goes. Except when the hardware starts to show it's age, I suppose. So if you want a portable gaming PC with decent support for gaming as well as a desktop experience, Steam Deck is a future proof investment. I might actually make it my daily driver PC setup if I seriously want one and order it. Building a PC is my primary choice but sadly in Europe it's not a budget friendly investment anymore. Hence why my interest in Steam Deck. I can literally buy a monitor, bundle that to a keyboard and mouse and there is my Linux/Windows PC. Will probably game better than my 10th gen intel soc ultrabook on docked mode too...

Switch's problem isn't about being under powered graphically for itself its more being under powered to handle 3rd party titles so it can be an all in one exclusive system.

They get away with not being more capable because of retro games and great 1st party games... and the most important thing we have 0 PS5 quality games. New systems is out but every game has lower end and still plays PS4 and Xbox still plays Xbox 1. But the future is getting where they need to get a little boost to handle what's coming.

Thankfully new systems play last system games makes this transition slow roll out way more favorable to them. Covid slow down still hitting the industry.

I have 4 Nintendo Switch's. After getting my Steam Deck, the Switch is definitely on life support.

actually they wouldn't have to do that as nintendo they could really just do like steam os and open source some of the games and the community would literally fix most of their issues for free, yes I get the fact they would then have a problem with some of their games on different devices but like you said none of these console manu's are really console companies their all software companies for the most part.
