Why I don't dock start (much) anymore (or... an alternative to dock starting)

Hey Dom. . . great explanation about the 'accelerator' effects of eAssist. I'm curious. . . what size battery you using there? Do you know it's configuration? 10S3p?

Hi Dominic, brilliantly inspiring and thorough videos... thanks so much! I'm 82kg, 47yrs old and not super fit. Done a bunch of board sports & surfing but just beginning my foiling journey. Would love to ride tiny swell, pump and eventually downwind & found a used foil drive (22.2v original model (not assist plus)) & wondering if you thought worthwhile as a learning tool. It's around £2500 cheaper than a new assist plus. Any guidance would be massively appreciated. Thanks again.

In my country you can get 41 ladders for one foildrive. A millioners toy? 5300 usd plus taxes 30 % a can dream about one and by me a ladder!

Your video is a gamechanger for me Dominic. I'm comfortable on eFoils and behind a boat. I want to learn pumping in the lake and river near my house. What size board, wing and mast height would you recommend to use with FD for someone who has never pumped. I weigh 78 Kg. Thanks a ton!!

Question from 73 kg guy, what will be the ideal board volume & front foil size for E-foiling?

1. Would 112 liter board (Reedin) be too big? If this is the case, how about 95 liter board (Froth)

2. Is it good to start E foiling with PNG 1150 & 460 set up? BSC1120 with 500 FR will be too big?

Hallo Dominic, nice video... like your voice :D. For me one of the greatest thing why i love dockstart is the use of the smallest boards for pumping as possible. 75cm x 33cm in 1,5kg. With such a board pumping or pumping in small bumps is so much "better". ...unfortunately this cannot be implemented with foildrive. That is the reason why foildrive is not an option for me. best regards

After a couple of days I can understand Dominics point from my perspective. Starting 5 years ago with dockstarting (after foil kiting, windsurfing, winging etc...) it is now a real passion, gliding with low effort and flying (not endlessly!). But to come to this point was really tough. Endless hours of frustration and hapiness and.....time, lots of time for exercise. With 56 years of age my talent is only to be patient and focused, thats all. After 30 sec pumping I loose the energy to fly relaxed. But these 30 sec. are wonderful and very special. At this point i guess, that the foil drive could help me to rest between the pumpsections and maybe connect them one day... for more distance from the dock :-))
Secondly it will be the only opportunity to transfer my pumpskills to the ocean without winging. I don't want to spent again hours and hours of practice DW paddling (it looks and feels simply too gorilla like), especially not in bumpy conditions. 5 years ago it was definitely worth it, but now it would be great getting some support to keep some energy to enjoy the nature ...

This is the same scenario of mountain bikes vs e-mtbs. IMO, both are great, they and each has its advantages and drawbacks. Hey, if money was no object, everyone would own one. So all good.

Intriguing video!! Do you find that the weight of the battery and drive compromises the pumping experience at all? Firstly, in terms of adding swing weight to the carving and pumping, and secondly, that it reduces its use as a training tool because you're having to adapt your technique to the weight?

It looks really good. Unfortunately battery assist is not allowed on the Swiss lakes……. If you put the propeller down the mast to the foil how does it ride? (Stealth mode)

Great video. That is exactly what I do on my local lake with Foil Drive. I take four Standard batteries and it is the most effective and efficient workout you can do for pumping a foil. Your two most valuable resources in life are time and energy -- FD is the best way to utilize them both with minimal waste.

cheating or not, for balance-challenged kooks like me, its the only opportunity to learn foiling. If its a choice between cheating to learn to foil/pump etc and watching a bunch of nice videos of others foiling, I will take cheating all the time.

There is something magical in surfing/kiting/wingfoiling/windsurfing/dockstarting related to using pure nature, wind, waves, legs… no motors, batteries, ECUs, chargers, fuel… only the pride of being “good enough” to use the nature forces :) maybe it is just me being nostalgic

Hey Dominic thanks again for showing me how to pump on ha wings, your videos made the difference, just an idea can u .are a video on advance dockstarts with smaller foils, like using short fuses and shiming and a dock u can run fast off of, I'm on my way to dockstarting on 1000cm foils thanks to u🎉🎉🎉🎉

Also I know you are now working for FD. Idea for a future video. A lot of your new FD users are Lift efoil riders transitioning over to FD or prone. If you were able to make a video covering the lift wings and setups as you’ve done with other foil brands I guarantee it would be a video that helps a lot of future and current FD riders

I am so glad to hear this. I justified purchasing my Foil Drive because where I live wind is unreliable, I don't own a boat, have access to a pier, or have surf nearby, but I do have a beautiful lake only few blocks away. I was looking for a way to get myself on the water daily if possible. Foil Drive allowed this to happen, but I felt guilty thinking that I was somehow cheating, not doing time flailing like others I talk to. This video confirms what I have felt, that this is without a doubt the best way to speed up one's foiling journey. Thank's for sharing.

I did not have much interest in dock starts or beach starts. Playing with the Foil Drive made me want to pump better to squeeze out a long ride on the smallest most choppy swell. Now I find myself shutting off the engine and pushing how far I can flat water pump. My wings are gathering dust like everyone else's in Florida during the summer. My boards stay wet. I am riding two or three times each day thanks to the Foil Drive. I probably would not have gambled on the purchase had I not seen what you were doing. Thanks for leading the way!🤙

Great prespective, I'm a big fan of mastering, rockstart beachstart as much as I can for the challange itself, however I'm planning to buy foildrive from the main reason of getting better on foil by having more foiling time.. completly agree on this.
