M5 Was great but steering compared to A 6 cilinder 530i. I think the 530i N54 and 525d/530d m57 were the greatest. Did 700000km on a 525TDS (m51) sold in 2022.

It's still 20 plus years old, for gods sake, even with the tuning from evolve can't make it a new car.
I find this is the problem with reviewers always comparing the new cars that they drive to cars, which are 20 plus years old.

I miss wood trim in modern cars. Maybe I'm just showing my age but when I see fake/real metal trim I just think the interior looks bland.

Mat, that bit of trim around the handbrake is original. It was original in 2001, not sure about prior models. And it was gone again by 2002.

E39 is not even close to be the best BMW M5 ever lol its not even half the car an F10 is? Its a cool car ? Hell yea it is but there is nothing else that does better and even the cool factor is arguably better

Interesting take, but the e39 has one major flaw that prevents it from being the best M5 ever: it does not have rack and pinion steering. It has a circulating ball setup. That was necessary because the bean counters didn’t want to pay for a redesign of the front end of the regular e39 to allow the necessary space. Compromise, and it shows when you drive it.

While the drivetrain is one of the best ever, the steering feel is quite lacking.

I know this is controversial, given it’s love it or hate it styling and challenging maintenance, but the pinnacle of the M5 was the e60. It had everything. Arguably the best engine of any sedan ever. Available with a manual. The last M5 with good steering feel. Jaw dropping performance developed without compromises, especially for its day. And the styling has actually improved with age.
